k. Lh. ur- THE LUMP CITY MINER: LUMP CITY, MONTANA. THE AMERICAN BIRTHDAY. Vil l . t aut Sunday the Lump City Chelan si Generally Celebrated Throughout the State, and Especially in Boulder. Lump IA etch hilts the County Capital anti lirings It Rack With Them, Inclu- ding Several Scalps from Nearly all of the inhabitante of Lump City and the miners off shift in the gulch generally, went away to spend the Fourth the base ball game and the drilling match attiacting many to Boulder, while business and the tireworke display in the evening, at Helena, were too tempting to be missed by others. Commencing at about two o'clock in the morning of the Fourth, sticks of giant powder, to which short pieces of fuse had been attached, commenced to explode on all the au rrond ing hills, and in the neighborhood of the differeut mines up and down the gulch, each explosion with a noise equal to a whole battery of heavy artillery, and the bombardment was kept up at intervals throughout the day, so that those who remained at home have credit for mak- ing noise enough for the balance of the county. The base ball team left for Boulder at about four o'clock in the morning, nearly all going together by team. They ar- rived in that city at about eleven, and al one o'clock went into the field against the celebrated semi-professional nine from Basin, expecting a hard game, as the Basins are an old organization of well drilled players. But they proved no match for the Lump Giants, who dem- onstrated themselves high-grade ball players, admirably sustaining the repu- tation of Lump, wiping the Basin team ()ff the earth by a score of 23 to 2. It is not known, and probably never will be, who it was that first informed the Basin nine that they could play ball, but evi- dently he was mistaken, whoever he was. They are too low-grade for Lump and require considerable concentration— about four into one—before they can go against a high-grade camp. Prize, $50. Two nines, composed of small boys, representing Basin and Boulder respec- tively, played a game of ball in the fore- noon. Basin won by two runs. Then cane) the drilling niatches, single and double handed. Hero again Lump parried off the honors. If there is any one thing that Lump will bet her last cent on it is her ability to down the rest of the world barring none ,either in a single or double handed drilling con- test.- her men assay away up into the pictures when it comes to drilling. There are men working in the mines of this gulch who hold the world's record for drilling, and if you doubt this state- ment there is money here that says \yea.\ Messrs. McCann and Campbell represented Basin, while J. A. Bieber and M. Moore entered from Lump. As usual, the rock furnished for the con- test was not large enough, even the Basin' team drilling through it. The mat:ch was poorly managed, but was won by Bieber and Moore, drilling 30% inches in 15 minutes. In the single drill Beber won With 11% inches in ten minutes, to which the contest was out down owing to the length of the pro- gramme. Several other of the lesser sports and games were won by citizens of Lump, and altogether the day was pronounced a decided success by all present. The crowd was a big one and everything passed off smoothly. The fire -works in the evening were enjoyable, the ball well attended, and all expressed them- selves as pleased with Boulder, its hos- pitable citizens and the celebration generally. The Chicago liquor store has put up a brand new sign. Mrs. Hancock and Mrs. Grisaenger visited the capital this week. Elaborate preparations are being made for the first annual ball of the A. O. U. W. lodge of this city. The contractors have commenoed sinking on the Last Chance and it will not be long before they are down . Ahe desired 200 feet. The Lump Cityitee who went away to celebrate the Fourth, stragglod home by twos and threes all day on the fifth, and each of them of the unanimous opin- ion that he hail had a glorious time. The saloon building and lot built e,nd owned by Kuntz and b. -Hewing, upon which E. Perkins and .1thers tiled hens for labor perfernitel was sold by the sherd)\ at Itonlder bi .lay to satisfy a Pelenient obtained by Perkins. We did not learn who bought the property. East Helena and played a return gaine with the Winston barke ball club. The gaine proved one of the most closely contested that has been plpyed in this part of Montana for some time. The Lump city boys out batted and out played the Winstona at every point, but notwithstanding this fact they were de- feated by a score of 4 to 8. No matter how good a genie a club may put up they find it uphill work to defeat a club, almost equally as stiong, and two umpires, both of whom, we tire informed had money wagered ott the Winston team winning. Luck was against Lump City from the start, awl one bad over- throw torst let in two runs. There were several pretty plays made on both sides, and had the decisions been strictly impartial the game would have resulted differently. Quite a number witnessed the contest, a large number being pre- sent from Helena, Winston and the surrounding country. Mrs. Dunwoody left on Monday last to join her husband and son who are engaged at work on n mine in Coloma, 1)eer I el dge county If the mine proves good Mr. an.1 Mrs I liinvc(iiely may put in the whole RUM nier in that locality, otherwise they niay rot irn to Lump 'ity in a few weeks World's Fair Concert Clarden. If bloomers are the thing in the effete east, where they have the reputation of living a life of luxurious idleness from the wealth produced in our mines, we can see no reason why they cannot, with equal pro- priety be worn in Lump Gulch. But whether they can or not bloomers have struck the gulch and struck it liard, particularly in the equestrian aocom- pliehment of the ladies. The new woman is receiving considerable atten- tion in the columns of eastern papers, and if she ehooses to make a man out of herself, or as near an approach to it as it is possible to go, there is no law to prevent them that we know of. If a woman must ride a horse perhaps the most sensible way is to rale both aid« of hiin at once. They can poke all the fun at the new woman imaginable but she will follow her fads until they be- come distasteful to herself, no matter where the laugh comes in. Lump City Lodge No. 61, A. O. U.
