The Cleveland Gang Fear a Free Silver Man Will be Nominated at Chicago. Silver Sentiment Growing. Jefferson was right in putting his faith in the American people. He had an abiding faith that they were capable of self-government. Sixty days ago it looked as if he was mistaken. The power of concentrated wealth’ had usurped the sovereign power of the government to regulate the volume of money, which ‘means the regulation of the value of money. The press, the telegraph, and the railroads were owned or controlled by the money powers.. The politicians of all parties -were vieing with each other in the race of submission and subserviency to the owners of money and bonds. The offices of this great government had been at the disposal of Wall and Lombard streets for years. The entire influence of the administra- tion, with all its patronage and plunder, ‘was used to control the people. These influences had captured the Republican party long years ago and held it in the firm grasp of avarive. The entire force of the banks, the press and the venal politicians was brought to bear to stifie the will of the Democratic masses and pack the Democratic convention to be held at Chicago on the 7th of July next. It seemed as if resistance was im possi- ble, and that all was lost. But within the last thirty days the Democratic masses have been aroused from their apparant submission. A spirit of liberty and independence has been manifested in the present struggle for delegates to the national convention which shows that the patriot sons of the founders of the republic have not degenerated. The power of money, of the press, and of the party The Huntington Steal Not Permitted at This Session.—The River and Harbor Bill to be a Law. The end of the session is*in sight. This will practically be the last week of Congress, although formal adjournment may possibly be deferred until Monday or Tuesday of next week, Everybody can agree in ‘crediting this Congress with having done at least one good thing, provided, of course, that the ex- pected ‘adjournment occurs on time, broken the record since 1830 as to the time consumed by a long session. The nearest approaches to the length of the present session were those of 1858, which adjourned June 14th; 1872, June 10th; 1878, June 20th, and 1880, June 16th. The opinion is as general among poli- ticians of all parties in Washington that the Chicago convention will be control- led by silver men as it is that McKinley will be nominated by the St. Louis con- vention. Up to within the past week, many who believed that the silver men would control the Chicago convention did not believe that they would adopt a radical platform or nominate a radical silver ticket, but now nearly everybody believes that the head of the ticket will be a pronounced silver man, although the administration men are still claim- ing exactly the contrary. Residents of states which have irriga- tion laws were not pleased when the U. 8S.
