H o s t s m e e t i n g . . . The Dillon Garden Club and Southwest District No. 3 played host to the state federation for its fall board meeting O ct 10 a t Western Montana College. Bar bara Hanic of Ashland, Mon tana Federation President and Margaret Yaw of Bozeman, Rocky Mountain Regional DU rector, attended the semi-annual business meeting. Nearly 50 Garden Club members from around Montana gathered under the banner of “Paint Your Pallet,” to lay plans for projects ranging from re gional forestation to community beautification development. Maryalice Martin of Great Falls was confirmed as the incoming treasurer of the organization. Garden Club members were treated, jat an evening banquet to entertainment by WMC’s Cantabliers and a slide and sound show of Hawaii by Pete Bengyfield. The Dillon Garden Club provided centerpieces de signed with locally grown fall flowers. Door prizes were pro vided by Stephens Greenhouse and Floral; Dillon Village Flo ral, The Bookstore and Riley Trucking Service, Inc. \ ) Mike Riley, distriet director for the Southwestern District, was local chairman of the meet ing. Charlene Loge and Pattie Waggie served as registrars. Local artist and Dillon Garden Club member Kitty Tayne do nated her talents for design of the evening’s art works. Other Dillon Garden Clubbers partici pating included Harriet Wat kins, Doris Richard, Paul Boet ticher and Meg Frank, t F l o w e r S h o w s c h o o l . . . Member clubs of the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs’ Southwestern District includ ing the Dillon Garden Club and the Buds *n’ Bloom Garden Club of Sheridan, sponsored Course Five ofthe Flower Show Schools series at the WMC campus Oct. 8-10. Eight students and refresher judges from three states took the course for credit; 17 auditors firom the local area learned from accredited National Council instructors. Teachers at the Dillon school included Shirley Spildie, Bill ings, abstract floral design, and Bev Savage, Salt Lake City, flower show procedure and hor ticulture. Tuberous begonias, ferns and herbs in combination plantings were study plants for the school. The Flower Show Schools is a five-course series offered by the National Council of State Gar den Clubs, Inc., to train accred ited judges for federation'sanc tioned flower shows, as well as other horticultural events such as fairs, expositions and sympo siums. Previous courses in this series were sponsored by gar den clubs in Billinj’p, Conrad and Helena. Local chairman for the event was Mike Riley, an accredited judge. Dillon Garden Club members Charlene Loge and Pattie Waggie assisted as regis trars of the three-day event Harriett Watkins, Doris Rich ard, Cathy Speich, Charlene Lo ge and Loujse Riley designed abstract floral arrangementsfor : judging tests. Joe Huidekopper, • Emma Rogan, Amelia Johnson and Stella Davenport served as proctors. Life andMaster Judges Darlene Skari from Chester and Alice Iverson from Conrad served on the master panel for design andhorticulture, Mr. and S t r u p p a w a r d e d E a g l e S c o u t A former Dillon youth, Kelly Strupp, was recently awarded ' Boy Scouting’s highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout Strupp received his honor at Pinehurst, Idaho, where he is now a member of Troop 322, sponsored by the LDS Church in Pinehurst. Engagements An eighth-grader, Strupp’s Eagle Scout project included making three outdoor wheel chair-accessible flower planters; refinished a split rail fence around the Shoshone Living Center at Kellogg, Idaho and rebuilding and refinishing a duck, shelter for a rabbit and duck pen. Strupp and his parents, Randy and Cheryl Strupp<are- former.Dillon residents. In ad-*; dition to his Scouting activities, Kelly is also involved in sports,: including football, basketball and baseball. His hobbies in clude hunting and fishing. He is a member ofthe Kellogg Middle School’s chapter ofthe National Junior Honor Society. Attending his Court of Honor cereinony firom Dillon were his grandparents, Elvin and Peggy Thompson; an aunt, Patti Kipp; Josephine Dickey; Billie and Don Pace; his Dillon Scoutmaster, Dr. Scott Olson with his wife Sue and their two sons and for mer classmates andfellow scouts (ESTj K E L L Y STRU P P Scott Blomquist and Jeremy Gaines. LEO R L A W H ITEHEAD Clark and Sandra (South) Whitehead, formerly o f D illon, are proud to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter, Leorla, o f Lewistown, to Sgt. Lance H . Wright, son of Ronald and Brenda Wright o f Lewistown. Leorla is a 1989 graduate of Fergus High School and is currently the Eaglette D rill Team advisor a t the high school. Lance is a 1984 graduate of Baldwin High School in Baldwin City, Kan., and is in the U.S. A ir Force. He is currently based in Kunsan, South Korea. Leorla is the niece of B ill and Dixie Cottom of D illon. Her theme is a “A Partnership wi th the Earth,” andher unified regional' project is \environ- mental awareness, especially the mounting,problem o f waste dis- oosal. Dillon Garden Club members were instructed on the results of the recent national 'conference on waste disposal in Portland, Ore., and encouraged to take the message of environ mental responsibility, especially concerning recycling and dis posal of plastics back to the local membership. . Watkins reported one ofthe highlight* of the meeting was a demonstration of Japanese flower arranging, w hidi covered a thousand years of that high tradition. She noted that for hundreds of years the only al lowed flower arrangers in J a pan were priests and Samurai warriors, a stark contrast to modem American society.
