Tuesday, Nov. 7,1980-JM28®i& \The Dividing Line... It’s a different kind of news paper. For one thing, the type is dif ferent. More than different There iBnt any. The “Dividing Lane,\ pub lished e v e r y two weeks in Di vide, ju s t a hop across the Beav erhead County line, ishand writ ten, in felt tip. The stories are short, some times pithy, and always right to the point. Ptiblished by grades 5-8 a t the Divide School, the eight kid and one teacher staff aren’t just putting out a grade school pa per, they’re putting out the only patter in Divide. Their stories reflect i t Puke Sampson just finished an article on \that famous au thor, Dirck Van, Sickle. He doesn’t write non-fiction, but says it is too much like home work.” The'class sells advertising in the paper and Clarence Wass- berg is the circulation director. He's worked hard for every one ofthV20paid subscriptions the “Dividing Line” boosts. HMary Graham, the > paper's edifcof, fs responsible for getting th? stories in the paper; Jolene Jensen is the advertising man ager. 'Unlike most school papers, which are funded through their school boards, the “Dividing Line” is strictly on its own. The high cost of printing, which is done on a copy machine in Dil lon, has boosted the price of the paper from 25 to 50 cents a copy, according to teacher M aiy Smith. And they have a ll the trials and tribulations of their cous ins, the bigger papers across the state. Danny Kambich workedhard on his storyabout coming across ft moose.' By press time, how* ever, the stoiy came out “bull mouse.\ The paper is being used as a learning exercise, as well as a community service, their teacher said. “They're w riting better a ll the time, and they’re learning restraint At first some of the stories were a little question able. They’re also getting used to calling strangers.” With just 14 students in the whole school, and only two teach ers, (both named Mar$r Smith, incidentally) the Divide stu dents have a unique schooling opportunity. “Better than Ana conda,\ one student said. “Butte doesn’t do anything,” said an other. Although the school i* in S il ver Bow County, i t works closely w ith Beaverhead County schools. They attend the Beav erhead County science fair and play in the Beaverhead County basketball league (teaming up with Melrose). Jolene Jensen makes asslngments for the next issue of the \Dividing Line,\ the school's paper. Helping are Clarence Wassberg, teacher Ms)(y Smith, Duke Sampson, Travis Jensen, Danny Kambich and Sara Salusso.
