E B I D C o m m i s s i o n e r s By Harry M, Thomas, U I SPANGDAHLEM, West Ger many - As dawn’s light breaks through a chilly fog blanketing the quiet countryside, fanners finish milking cows and begin other chores, much as their fa thers before them. Suddenly, a screeching roar shatters this idyllic calm. Farm ers look up to see an American F-16 Fighting Falcon and an F- 4 Phantom tandem racing across the sky. Shrugging their shoul ders, they resume their work. They don’t mind the noise, be cause it’s the sound of freedom Helping maintain that calm in West Germany is U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Michael K. Dvorak, 22; son of Mr. and Mrs, Thomas V. Dvorak formerly of Dillon. Dvorak is a fuels special ist for the 52nd Supply Squad ron at Spangdahlem Air Base, home of the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing. Li vingin Germany is a unique experience for most Americans. The central location in Europe makes travel between countries easy and inexpensive. Rich cul tures and languages change with tiie crossing of each border. \I enjoy living in Germany because it is so different from the United States. The food, wine and beer are great, and F ll miss them when I leave,\ said the 1985 graduate of Beaverhead County High School. Americans find plenty to do in their free time. Spangdahlem, located in theheartofthe Rhein- land-Pfalz district of Germany, is close to Germany's oldest city, Trier. The river Mosel also snakes through this region, its banks covered with vineyards supplying the many wineries in the area. “I like to spend my off-duty time parajeli u t^ ,*appelingand taking photos o f Germany and its cultures* said Dvorak. However, surviving in Ger many requires Americans to make some change in their ac customed lifestyle. The differ ences in language, money, shop ping conveniences, and driving can be quite stressful. Tve had to adjust to a few changes, Uke 220 volts instead of 110, no speed lim it on the autobahn (German highway) and the language barrier,” he said. The Germans themselves are a source of amazement to Ameri can servicemen and their fami lies stationed here. Americans raised on a steady diet of old war movies find a German cul ture and lifestyle quite unlike what they expected. BCHS students named to honor roll Edna Mihelish, Lily Brown, and Mary Rose. Christmas decorations were made and refreshments served. No date for the Christmas party has been set. ► D e l l c o m m u n i t y n e w s . . .
