Zenchiku, the former S e lk irk ranch which was purchased la s t year by a Japanese food-proc essing company, presented the program as a sample of the world-wide attention the new company is getting .' Zenchiku L and a n d Livestock president J o h n Morse told the group the ranch h a s made good progress during the year and has drawn a large num ber of visitors exam in in g the facility and its techniques. The company has been the subject of a rticles or programs on n a tional television, in J a p a n and G reat B r itain. I t has also been w ritten u p in m any m q jo r newspapers- and m a g a zines, Morse added. The ranch began its first exports to J a p a n in J u n e a n d a shipm e n thasbeen made n e arly every week. In the past few m onths, Morse said, over $1 m illion worth o f b e e f h a s been shipped, exceeding the total of a ll the b e e f exported to J a p a n by other M o n ta n a concerns. Zenchiku, which also sells beef dom estically, produces ac cording to Japanese expecta tions, w hich are m iddle choice to m id d le p rim e , Morse s a id . According to the firm ’s five- year p la n , the ranch is expected to double its exports n e x t y ear and m a rket i t under its own brand name, tentatively selected as Selkirk Brand Beef. “We expect to s h ip every week next year.\ ' “As we expand our beef, we’re hopeful we can buy some of the high quality beef in this area,” Morse said. Processing for the ranch is done in three locations', in C a li fornia a n d Kansas, w ith feeding done in C a lifornia, Idaho and Kansas. ‘There’s no o p p o rtunity to finish in th is area,* Morse said, n o ting he h a s hopes for a possibility o f a processing p la n t being reactivated in B illings. “Zenchiku r ig h t now is ju s t a ranch. We hope we’re a good neighbor.” Morse also said he expects the ranch has had a positive im p a c t on the area, w ith the firm b u y in g as much as possible locally and sending numerous people to area motels and res taurants. The program shown the a u d i ence was p a r t o f a longer one done on the p a rent company and aired in Tokyo.
