The fastrbreak- ing Bulldogs took advantage o f C a rdinal turnovers and poor shooting to b u ild th e ir b ig early lead. The Bulldogs led 49-28 a t the h a lf. A tough zone defenseby N orth Idaho ear^y in the second h a lf slowed the Bulldogs for a short tim e , b u t outside shooting by Anthony G u llo a n d K evin E ngel la n t triggered another B u lldog run. J u n io r Tracy Davis earned f ir s t team honors a t defensive back and punter, and wa$.,named as the second team quarterback. Rick Tash, a senior, was nam ed f ir s t team defensive g u a rd and second team offensive guard. Senior Em ry McAlear earned first team line backer status, w h ile senior Lewis Reynolds was a second team ' offensive end. Senior Shawn K e lly was tabbed for defensive end on the second team and ju n io r Chad Johnson re ceived honorable m e n tion a t center. Five Lim a players were re warded for fine seasons. J u n io r D a llas Jensen earned firs t team running back honors and sec ond team status a t defensive back and punter. Senior J o h n Stosich was a first team defen sive end and a second team running back. John W e n d t, a senior, waB nam ed to the second team a t offensive guard and defensive end. J u n io r Sean Es- t i l l received second team honors a t defensive guard and honor able m e n tion a t center. Dan Brown, a senior, received honor able m e n tion a t linebacker. Two Sheridan players were also n am ed to the team . S enior K ip Funk was an honorable m ention a t linebacker and of fensive g u a rd, w h ile B ill B e iler received the same honor a t de fensive back. Davis led T w in B ridges to the playoffs w ith an outstanding season on b o th sides o f the b a ll. Davis passed for nine touch downs a n d rushed for 365yards on offense, w h ile racking u p 75 tackles a n d two in te rceptions on defense. Tash was credited w ith 44 tackles for the season, w hile McAlear led the team w ith 97 tackles and picked o ff two en emy passes. Reynolds, Davis’s favorite target, averaged 18.5 yards per catch on 13 receptions. A tough full-court defense began to take its to ll in the sec ond h a lf as the Lady Bulldogs began to p u ll away from the m istake prone North Idaho squad. Darcy Sturm led three p la y ers in double figures w ith 14 points, followed by Tammi Sut- lif f w ith 13 and Bobette Sand w ith 12. \We s t ill are not playing as well as we w a n t to a t this tim e ,” noted Head Coach Gary Cooper. “We committed 30 turnovers and th a t is way too much.” “The second h a lf we executed the offense, played b e tter as a team , and our full-court press fin a lly wore them down,” said Cooper. “We controlled the tempo o f the game.” “I ’m proud o fthe way the k id s worked h a rd,” s a id Cooper. The duo recently completed a fine season for the W estern M o n ta n a College L ady BulldogB. Two other Lady Bulldogs, B illie Bennett a n d J o a n i Mogo lis , were nam ed to the second team . Reynolds, a ju n io r , paced Western w ith 178 k ills and 96 blocks, w h ile M a iley, a sopho more, converted 170 k ills a n d 72 blocks. Bennett, from Helena, capped o ff a fine senior y ear w ith 138 k ills a n d 87 blocks; w h ile fellow senior Mogolis, firom Bigfork, was credited w ith 445 assists. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season w ith a 12-14 m a rk. A late season surge by the Twin Bridges Falcons came to an end la s t weekend in the d ivi sional tournam e n t h e ld in M is soula. The Falcons dropped the ir opening round game 57-45 to H o tSprings,butreboundedw ith a 52-43 w in a g a in s t D rummond. Twin Bridges then loB tin a S a t urday m o rning loser-out game 67-40 to Philipsburg. Q u ite a n accomplishment for a team th a t d id not even exist two s h o rt seasons ago. The BulldogB finished 14th in team rushing offense, b u t made u p the difference b y fin is h in g th ir d in team p a s s in g offense. W estern finished fourth in team scoring offense. Defensively the BulldogB w ill have to im prove in 1990 to be a contender for the Frontier Conference crown. W estern finished 14th in team to tal defense, 11th in team rushing de fense, 14th in team pass defense, a n d 14 in team scoring defense. D is tr ic t 12 consists o f 17 football teams from M o n ta n a , N o rth D a k o ta , a n d South Dakota. In d iv id u a lly the Bulldogs fared p retty well. Ju n io r q u a rterback P a u l M a k i finished th ir d in both total offense w ith 230yards p e r game, a n d . passing w ith 236yards per c o n test M a k i threw for 1653 y a rds a n d 12 touchdowns this season. Sophomore B ill Polk ended the season w ith 31 receptions, good for 4.4 per game a n d 10th in the district. Polk also finished 10th in scoring w ith 5.1 points per contest. He pulled in six touchdown passes. kick scoring w ith five p o in ts p e r game. C lemens connected on 17-24 extra p o in ts a n d was 6-6 in the field goal departm e nt. Freshman punter R a lp h Chavez was the eighth best p u n ter in the conference averaging 35.7 yards per k ick. M issoula w ill be the spot for the biggest college football game in the state since 1985 when the M o n tana State Bobcats defeated Arkansas State a n d Rhode Island on back-to- back weekends enroute to the n a tional c h a m p i onship. The M o ntana G rizzlies w ill h o st Jackson State in the first round o f the NCAA Division I- AA football playoffs.
