Craig Finberg, in his fourth year as head coach, will look to guide his talent-rich team to the promised land. The Beavers, 13-8 last sea son, return seven varsity letter* meni all seniors, to the fold. Jason Donnelly, a 5’H ” guard, Jaison Stiff, a 6’3\ forward, 5’9\ guard Tory Taylor, S’S\ guard Brad Doig, 5’10H guard Shawn Allen, 6' forward Rich Ferris, and 6’4\ center Andy Benson will be looked upon for leader ship in their final season. Jun iors Nick Miller, e 5’H\ guard, and 6* forward Dan Ferris, along with sophomore guard Trent Taylor round out the squad. Donnelly led the team in s p r ing last year with 14.6 points per game and is noted as one of the most dangerous three-point shooters in the conference. Donnelly connected on 57 triples last season. Stiff was the second leading scorer with 12.2 PPG, followed by Ferris at 12.1. Stiff pulled down 5.5 rebounds pergameand led the team with an 80 percent free throw percentage. The guard trio ofTaylor, Doig, and Allen give the Beavers a lightning quick backcourt that can distribute the ball, or pull up and hit outside shots at any given time. Taylor averaged 8.7 points a game last year, includ ing 45 percent of his three-point shots. Doig averaged 9.6 points a contest and will create oppor tunities for teammates with his driving ability. Miller, Dan Ferris, and Trent Taylor spent last season on the junior varsity team. “We are excited with the re turning players firom last year's team,” noted Finberg. “We feel with the talent we have we can be as good as anybody.” 1 want to raise the expecta tion of the players,” added Fin berg. “We will expect more of ourselves and we will not be afraid to fail. Our goal is to win the state championship, but we will take, care ofthe little things along the way. Back-drafting, especially during the coldest months of a Montana winter, has been labeled the “Quiet Killer.” Back-drafting occurs when the by-products of combustion in a fireplace, stove or gas fur nace are drawn back into the room, in place of fresh air for ■ combustion, rather than being exhausted to the outside. It is, according to the Safety Council, a serious problem as the by products may contain carbon, monoxide. Fireplace and wood-burning stoves, especially, require a lot of air while burning. Many well- sealed homes, the product of weatherization practices such as floor and not be afraid to shoot the ball if it's a good shot,” noted Finberg. “We can hit shots in- ■ side and outside, and that should make us a tough team to de fend.” “If we can utilize our quick ness and take a lot of shots then it will be to our advantage.” “The conference should be very tough. Livingston and Anaconda played for the state championshiplastseason so they know what it takes to make it to the biggame. Havre and Brown ing should be very tough-by tournament time.” - - “I feel it will be an exciting' year for basketball in Dillon,” concluded Finberg. The junior varsity roster will consist of 11 sophomores: Greg Lemelin, Tod Petersen, Kasey Briggs, Damon Weekes, Larry Erickson, Scott Schield, Todd Keridell, Jay Holt, Jared Rora baugh* Will Taylor, and Pat Bailey. After a few minutes, carefully touch the vent pipe of the fumace, hot waterheaterorany space heater. If the vent is cold, the fireplace could be creating a dangerous back-draft. Turn down the thermostats and water heater temperature controls immedi ately and let the fireplace tum out The council advised people with a back-draft problem to contact a heating and plumbing contractor or the local utility company for further assistance. Sheridan Pan thers as they prepare for the, 1989-90 season. The Falcons are coached by Ron Mailey, in his sixth year, who guided his team to a 24-2 record last season. Senior Shawn Kelly, 6’1\ (12 PPG) returns as a strong rebounder with six caroms a game. Junior John Giles led the team with seven rebounds a game and scored 10 points a contest in his sophomore year. Rounding out the squad will be 6’5\ senior Louis Reynolds, 6’1\: senior Emry McAlear, 6' senior Cory Day, 5*10 senior Todd Hubert, 6' junior Randy Boyd, 6 T junior Chad Johnson, and sophomore Travis Gibson. Junior Dustin Keltner, (a starter last season, averaged eight rebounds and eight points per game but will be lost for the season with a knee injury. “I feel real good about the season,” noted Mailey. “We lost only one player to graduation (Andy Nye), and I feel that we have the talent to pick up the slack. If it is possible, I look for a better season thisyear than last We will strive to improve on the personal improvement aspect” “We will try. to play within our own capabilities,” added Mailey. Teams will be pumped up to play us so we will have to be ready. In Lima Head Coach Jerry Allen, in his second season, S p e e c h r e s u l t s Beaverhead County High School’s speech team earned second place honors for schools in classes A, B and C at the Butte tournament last weekend. Dillon area finalists in the tournament included Heather Gneiting, seventh place in the Lincoln-Douglas debate; Karen Peters, second place in the Lin coln-Douglas debate; Mary Frances O’Connor, second place in humorous oral interpretation; Jodi Jones, second place in memorized public address and Becky Angell, first place in origi nal oratory. .welcomed 19. players to begin theyear. The Bears finished 14- 6 last season and third in the conference. Allen returns four starters from last year's squad. Senior Bill Flager, 5 ^ , returns as theleadingscorer with tight points per game and two steals a contest Senior Kip Funk, 6', grabbed six rebounds a game last year and is expected to be an inside force fof the Panthers this season. Four juniors round out the returning lettermen. Jason George, 6’2\ 6’4\ Dave Fetter- ley, S’S\ Bill Bieler, and S’ll Joe Forcella saw plenty of playing timelastyear and will be counted onforleadershipduringthelong season.
