A special weekend women’s retreat, designed for female non- traditional students, spouses, faculty and staff, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, on the Western Montana College campus. According to co-coordinator Denice Rust, the retreat was created because “there was a real need for some type of communication among non-traditional females on Western’s campus. Tins retreat will be educational, fun and an informal o p p o r tu n ity for women to meet and get acquainted.” The retreatis sponsored in part by the ASWMC Student Senate and Provost's Office, accordingto Cathy Boyd, retreat co-coordina- vor, and is open to all Western women, including students, spouses of students, faculty and staff members. Cost for the retreat is $16 which includes lodgng and meals. Limited openings are available. Interested women should contact Denice or Cathy at the Western Student Senate Office days at 683-7612. McLaren averaged only about three points per game, but was known as an outstanding defensive player. “One thing that really sticks out in my mind is playing against Chuck Darling of Helena High when he was only 15 years old and he stood noted McLaren. “I was much $horter than him, but I did a pretty good job of defending him. I used to stand on the back of his shoes, then break in front of him when the pass came.” “W6‘played Heletia High. >n Helena one night and Iwent to the gairieiafter haVirig the fluall week< My dad did hot know I went to the game and when he found out he was really mad and almost pulled me off the team,” said McLaren. Harrison and Hazelbaker spent a large majority of time on the bench as underclassmen, but have fond memories of the season. “The game that stands out the most for me is the first game of the T h e D i l m a r t Joetta (Bacon & Putty Meredith, (Dec. 9 Jennifer Jones & Matthew Clinton, (Reception (Dec. 29 Ohvt chosen misccGantaus items. 3 1 8 . We received a lot df support from the Dillon people who were very proud of us,” added Harrison. “I learned a lot about competition that year and I realized that coaches are teachers,” noted Hazelbaker. “I learned the importance of team concept Though we had stairs, everyone was important to the success of the team.” “McLaren played with a lot of courage,” added Hazelbaker. “He had a bum shoulder that would pop out during tiie game. We would take time out, pop it back in, then get back to playing.” Times in 1946 were tough. The team had to travel in individual cars to games and never stayed overnight when out of town. The people of Dillon supported their conquering heros. 1100 people would pack the old high school gym to watch the Beavers run circles around the opposition. Most people stood and many seemed to be hanging out of the rafters at tiie home contests. Clancy was a coach that was respected tremendously by the players. He was a brilliant tactician with outstanding coaching skill and human insight The 1946 basketball team thrilled a great number of people with hustle, drive, and the desire to be the very best They have been voted tiie best team in BCHS histoiy. A well deserved honor for an outstanding team.
