Tanner, Beaverhead Count) Extension \genl Canada Thistle spreads to U.S. The Beaverhead County Extension and the Beaverhead County Weed Board would like to take a few minutes of your time to help increase your awareness of a possible threat. This week’s weed is Canada Thistle. Canada thistle is a native of southeastern Eurasia. It was intro duced to Canada as a crop seed contaminate. Description: Canada thistle is a perennial that has a deep and extensive horizontal root system. The stems can be anywhere from one to four feet tall, ridged while branching above. Leaves are alter nating and lance-shaped. Flow ers are unisexual, on separate plants, the plants can be purple or occasionally white in heads. Fruits tire brownish with it tuft of hairs at the top. The flower ing usually occurs during June and August. Control: To manage Canada thistle you will need to choose herbicides properly, selecting ones that will kill the thistle and entice desirable foliage to grow. Glvphosate is relatively safe for both humans and the environ ment; it breaks down quickly in the soil, and does not leach through soil into ground water. You need to remember that it will kill all foliage it touches. Some other herbicide products that maybe used are Turdon, Transline, Redeem R&P, 2,1-1) and Curtail However, remem ber these products have the po lent ini to remain in the soil longer Fall applications can be wry effective if adequate moisture and plant growth conditions permit Be sure to apply herbicide products propci !y by reading and fol lowing the labels for proper application rates. Hearing set on FWP extension process Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will hold a public hearing Oct. 27 in Helena to discuss big game hunting-season extension proce dures and objectives. The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is considering a new rule that outlines when and how hunting seasons can be ex tended. The hearing, which will be held at FWP Headquarters, 1460 E. 6th Ave., is set for 7 p.m. FWP generally depends on a five-week hunting season to man age and control the state's deer and elk populations. The proposed rule is designed to provide for season extensions when normal management falls short of harvest goals, when ex- ' treme weather will likely cause animals to die, or when game dam age is occurring across a large area of Montana. Written comments will be ac cepted through Oct. 29. For infor mation call 406-444-2612; email: fwpwld@state.mt.us; or write: Season Extension; Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks; Wildlife Divi sion; P.O. Box 200701; Helena, MT, 59620-0701.
