I>iLtx>N T r ib u n e S ports N ews Page A-16 Wednesday, October 6, 2004 UM -W rodeo Continued from page A-15 Other Western independents to score were Colt Conley in bareback, Tyler Foerchinger with a first in the steer wres tling long go, Buck Ryan in saddle bronc, Brad Marshall in calf roping, and Cotton Holt in team roping. The Western women placed third in the team standings with 85 points. A nice total consid ering Western independents won two individual events, but coming off a second in the na tion performance at the CNFR, expectations are much higher for the Lady Dawgs. They sit second in the region heading into the break just points ahead of Northwest College and well behind Montana State. \We just haven't connected,\ said Else. \The girls are a little disappointed and a little dis couraged, but I saw some good things. We're a solid second and we're going to the CNFR, there's no doubt about it. I'd like to be first but Chris has a real bal anced team at MSU so we'll see what happens. I really think we'll get them by the end of the spring.\ Bry Worthen, second in the nation in breakaway roping this past summer, carried the load for the women's varsity with 80 team points off a second place in the average with a 7.2 second combined time, and she placed in both rounds. Western's other five points came from Tracy Bevans with a fourth place split in the barrel racing long go. Western's problem on the women's side isn't that they don't have talented athletes, it’s just that they have so many tal ented athletes that's it's hard to pick the right four for the var sity team each week. Dillon senior Tammy Eberline just moved off the var sity and struck gold with a first place in the barrel racing aver age. Eberline edged MSU su per frosh Mercedes Knudson who has dominated the clover- leaf pattern through the fall. Lauren Watson, an MSU transfer who became eligible at Dillon after sitting out the first three rodeos on the transfer rule, placed third in the barrel racing average and made it back in the team roping short go to give Else another option on the varsity team. Freshman Amber Overstreet made her own claim for varsity notice with a first place aver age finish in goat tying. Overstreet timed 16.4 on two head for the buckle. Adding to Western's 240 in dependent point total were Whitney Wines in goat tying, and Tireani Brussett in team roping. Piutt photo UM-W Lady Dawgs stumble on road; defense needs help The UM-Western Lady Bull dogs lost twice in Frontier Con ference action last weekend, to fall to the bottom of the league standings in th e early going. Western lost at Butte Thursday night after taking a 2-1 lead, and then fell flat at Lewis-Clark State on Saturday. \It just comes down to the girls need to have confidence and they need to get the job done out there,\ said UM-W coach Jenny Peterson. \It just seems when you put the pressure on them their technique goes out the window, their confidence goes out the window.\ Western actually played Tech tough for a majority of the match. After three games the Lady Dawgs led, 2-1, and forged a 10-3 lead in game four. Tech then picked up their in tensity and won the match, 28- .30, 30-23, 21-30, 3-23,15-5. \They just started serving tougher,\ said the coach. \They didn't miss as many serves and their aggressive serving is pretty tough anyway. We just couldn't pass.\ Tech rang up an unheard of 21 aces on Western as Western's serve-receive broke down. Western utilized the 5-1 of fensive attack versus Tech, but middle blocker Katherine Sunwall couldn't make the trip to L-C because of a family mat ter so Peterson went back to the 6-2 to balance the front line. L-C ended a 10-game losing streak with a win over Western in the first game, eventually winning, 30-27, 27-30,30-17,30- 22 . Twin Bridges, Lima lose on grid The Twin Bridges Falcons took on top-ranked, undefeated state C champion Drummond on the road and managed to do something no other Drummond opponent has managed to do this season- score on the Trojans. On the flip side, Drummond won the war, 68-6. In the third quarter, junior running back Trevor Brown, who has been the heart of the Twin offense all season, broke loose on a quarterback draw, scoring from 12 yards out. \They made him earn it, but he got in,\ said Twin coach Rob Lott. Lima felt the sting of defeat on the road at Reed Point, falling 40-0. \They’re a real fundamentally sound team,\ said Lima coach Jack Hutchison. They’ve got a kid that's about 215-pounds that is a good inside runner and a great blocker leading the sweep. Lima freshman Travis James ran for 90 yards in the perfor mance of the day for the Bears. \He’s got great vision in the open field,\ said Hutchison.
