Every year since the advent of divisional play, Dillon golf teams on both sides have placed as a unit and advanced to the big dance. This time around, Dillon finished second to Ana conda with a 338 total to keep the streak alive. Dillon placed fourth on the girls' side to just miss the auto matic qualificiation, but three of the team's four members scored in the top 15 to make it to state as individual qualifi ers. For the boys, Jeff Allen fired a 77 to place second on the indi vidual side, while Marko Stanisich tied for fifth at 85. Shane Cottom, Jason Schumaacher and Chase Godecke rounded out the team. For the girls, Maggie War ren placed third with a 98, and Lydia Decker and Jamie Lake placed 11th and 15th respec tively to advance. The Lady Beavers are finally playing with the defensive mindset that will be critical to their success down the stretch, j . p . piutt photo By J.P. Piutt The Dillon Lady Beavers picked up a pair of conference wins over the weekend, stretch ing their league winning streack to three matches after defeat ing Frenchtown at home Friday night and Hamilton on the road Saturday. \Every week it seems like we're eliminating more of the mental mistakes and we're mov ing right along to where we need to be by the time the tourna ments begin,\ said Dillon coach Megan Conrow. The Hamilton win proved the more difficult as the Lady Broncs played a never-say-die defensive style reminiscent of Butte Central teams of the past. Dillon's improvement stems from a more intense defensive effort and the fact that more hitters are becoming effective, taking the load off Theresa Bennett. Bonnie Gardner, Jenna Nield and Brittany Eisenzimer are all increasing their effectiveness at the net making it more difficult to double and triple block Bennett. \When we have more players stepping up it gives all of our hitters more open areas to hit because the blockers can't fo cus on stopping just one or two of our girls,' said the Dillon coach. Dillon's improved confi dence level with their success is also a factor in their play. Dillon def. Frenchtown 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23 Dillon stilts; Jennu Nield 17 kills, 16 digs. Dillon CC picks up pace at Hamilton race The Dillon girls showed vast improve ment at the Hamilton Invitational cross country meet and the Dillon boys experi mented with race strategy Saturday on the grounds of the Daly Mansion. The boys ran to a fourth place finish in the 13 team field while the girls placed sixth out of ten. Ronan swept both titles and figures to be on equal ground when the state meet rolls around. JjtVe thought we.would try to.be more patient in the first mile and then turn it on as the race went on,\ explained coach Jerry Girard of the new plan. \Unfortunately we were a little too patient in the first mile.\ Girard expected first mile times in the 5:30 range but the boys covered the first third of the race about ten second slower and then couldn't overcome the hole the dug. \A lesson well learned,\ said Girard. \The girls had a better performance than they did in Missoula, hut we're still not where we want to be at this point in the season,\ said the coach. \We'd like to see some of those older girls running a little faster.\ At Hamilton, Lynn Reynolds and Mason Giem paced the boys at seventh and ninth, respectively. Dillon didn't have a finisher among the top 20 girls. \Baby steps or big steps, they're still steps forward,\ said the coach. \So we took a baby step and we think we'll take a couple big steps at home the next two weekends.1' The team hosts the Dillon Invitational this Saturday and then the Southwestern A divisional the following week. Both meets will be held at Beaverhead Golf Course. Piutt photo Sheridan gridders thump Victor, 50-0 The Sheridan Panthers took their show on the road to Victor and emerged victori ous, 50-0. The effort was the second con secutive shutout pitched by the Panther defense. \Things went well for us from the very beginning of the game,\ said Sheridan coach Ed Burke. \We were executing well, we were blocking we much better than we did earlier in the season. Our backs are seeing the holes and getting through.\ Sheridan’s 50-0 win follows a similar score versus Twin Bridges the week be fore. While Burke has been getting plenty of playing time for his younger players, the team is focused on holding the oppo nents scoreless regardless of who is in the game. \We've talked about posting a shut out, that's one of the things we've wanted to do,\ explained Burke. \We're getting a good pass rush, we've controlled the run well, we re reading counter if that is what teams are doing. Our pass coverage in the sec ondary has been great.\ That defense was airtight versus a Vic tor team that in the past was power-counter run oriented. This season they’ve gone to a shotgun, pass offense, but struggled with bad snaps on numerous plays. Sheridan built a 20-0 first quarter lead on a Louie Bartoletti pass to Ryan Wood and runs from Brady Marsh and Pete Rossiter. Rossiter would score three touch downs on the day including two second quarter runs of 24 and 2? yards. With a 28-0 lead, reserves took over the offensive unit for most of Hie second half. Jeremy Burke scored a 'I'D in the third quarter and freshman Justin Clark capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a three yard run Western football Continued from page A-15 Senior leader Western senior Dallas Mock goes up high over the middle for one of his team-high six receptions. Mock scored the games first touchdown on a pass from Travis Blome. j . p . Piutt phctot Zaeh Tune led the total tackle chart with 12 stops and the indi vidual stop total with five solo takedowns. Linebacker Eric Stoverud and safety Nick Prin/ing added eight tackles. \I tell you what, that game defensively, we played down hill and with emotion,\ said Lee. \Our linebackers came up and hit holes. We weren't sitting hack and waiting for the blockers to get into us.\ \Now we know how it feels to play as a team and to play with that kind of emotion.\ »24 M O N I AN A TECH 14, CM WF.STKHN .14 Second Quarter I'M-W -DaMas Mock 25 pa«.s from Tr;t\ i* Blome iEric /.abler kick) 8.55 CM-W Josh shrum 48 run /ab ler kick • 6 56 TKC’H Adoni Gmton 3* run (Kleckner kick» 1‘M -W -Jnsli Bin H» ynss from Blome (/abler kick) no > Third Quarter I'M -W Shrum 15 puss from Blome i kick failed i h 19 Fourth Quarter CM-W* ''hrtim 2 run (Zahler kick' 12 <r> T F C H -K e \in Diphans 3 run iKlecknei kick) im 3o Team statistics First downs CMW 4] TK( I I 22 Rushes-yards 41-23\ 30-79 Pass yards 241 241 Passes-cnmp-inl. 32 19-1 1.4-26 0 Total plays-yards “3-4\K 7-320 Fumbles-lnst no 2 1 Penalties-yards 14-124 8-121 Punts-ave 5 4o •' H-40 0 Sacks by-vards 4 r 5-28 I ’M W Individual stats Rushing -.tosh Shrum 14-153. Beavs stunned at Corvallis Dillon faces must win game versus Hamilton Friday The Dillon Beavers confer ence championship hopes took a near fatal hit at Corvallis with a last-minute 35-28 loss, ami lhe team will likely be in for a ter rific battle just to make it to the playoffs. While still alive for both possibilities, Dillon must at least win two of their final three games (home versus Hamilton, on the road at Stevensvilie and Frenchtown). \We give them credit,\ said Dillon coach Terry Thomas. \They were able to stay in the game and they never gave up. They made some big plays when they had to and came away with the victory.\ Corvallis exploited what has become evident as Dillon's weakness-their run defense. For the game the Blue Devils pounded the ball for 249 yards on 46 carries out of a Wing-T set. Corvallis scored two quick touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead. On their opening series they needed just four plays to cover 57 yards. A Dillon turnover on just their second offensive play gave Corvallis a short field and they converted on the second of two, four yard runs to go up 14 0. \I think our line actually came around and created some holes for us,\ said Corvallis coach Tony Smith. \They re a young offensive line and they're starting to figure out what s going on out there.\ Dillon regrouped and follow ing a Corvallis fumble, con verted their own touchdown drive, moving 72 yards on seven plays with Zaeh McRae hitting John Ori for the in yard touch down connection McRae also solved a season-long PAT prob lem with a successful hoot He ended the night four of four at the extra point tries. Corvallis stalled with their ensuing drive and a had snap on a punt left Dillon in enviable field position. The Beavers capitalized with a 41 yard scor ing drive with McRae running the ball in for the score. In the second half, Dillon came out and scored quickly- getting a 41-yard McRae to Ori connection to click for a score and 21-14 Dillon lead. Shortly after, McRae hit Cory Ander son for a 25-yard scoring com- hination and Dill.m appeared to he in control, 25-14 The Blue Dev ils then rallied for 21 unanswered points to take the win in the final minute of the game n u i o \ 2 ». i mu \u is is Fir st ».Mini tt-r ( !>K\ IV *v N11 ■ ' 1!
