Climbers killed on Sphinx Mountain Two mountain climbers were killed when an avalanche swept them off Sphinx Mountain near here, Madison County officials said Sunday. The victims were identified as Nathaniel Stevens and Bryan Nelson, both 25, of Missoula. \The slide took them down,\ said Sheriff's Deputy David plark. \They weren't totally buried. They.took two 30*foot . fails.” ■ i ' Witnesses said the men fell 30 feet to a ledge ahd then fell another 30 feet to the bottom, Clark said. A third climber, Justin Elliott, also of Missoula, was not caught in Saturday's avalanche because he had stopped to tighten his boot, Clark said. The three men were intending to ice climb and were traversing the north side of the mountain, which is in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness southeast of Ennis in the Madison Range. Clark said the avalanche occurred about 9:30 a.m. Satur day during a snow storm, and it may have been triggered by overhanging snow cornices breaking off. Clark said authorities were notified about three hours after the acci dent. Four separate parties were on foot in the area intending to ice climb and one of them included an emergency medi cal technician, who was able to reach the victims and determined they were dead, Clark said. Air and ground attempts to retrieve the bodies Saturday failed, Clark said, and officials used horses on Sunday to bring out the bodies. Jeffrey Safford, professor emeritus of history at Mon tana State University, will give the history of the Hot Spring Mining District, located between McAllister and Harrison on the north and south and the Madison River and the crest of the Tobacco Roots to the west. Safford is the author of a book being published in Novem ber called \The Mechanics of Optimism: Technology and the Hot Springs Gold Rush,. Montana Territory, 1864-1868.\ Safford will tell how gold mining ventures were developed and financed by men with little knowledge of mining in expectation of rich profits, only to be disappointed. The district includes the \Stirling Restoration.,\ a nonprofit or ganization, dedicated to preserving the remains of the ghost town. Gold mining continued on a small scale in the district until World War 2. Rotary President Frank Nelson asked those wanting to attend dinner to call Carolyn Scruggs, club secretary, at 684-5918 by noon on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Leave a message if you get the answering machine. Those who want to attend the talk but not the dinner should come at 7:30 p.m. At the club's October 20th meeting Sheriff David Schenk and Deputy Dan Birdsill talked about the county Canine Program in combatting drug and alcohol abuse. Birdsill has obtained a Dutch shepherd. He and the dog are being trained to locate illegal drugs with the expectation that this will help reduce the flow of drugs into and in the county. Dutch sherpherds are similar to German shepherds. Due to lack of funds program donations are especially welcome. £ > J - C 9 » © f © % snow and strong winds on Thursday night. \That's what created the current avalanche conditions,\ said avalanche scientist Karl Birkeland of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.
