Piutt' photo The UM-Western Bulldogs, tri-champions with Carroll Col lege and Montana Tech atop the final regular season Frontier Conference standings, earned 12 first team selections and seven second team awards in All-Conference balloting re cently completed by the league's coaches. Defense Up front, Western senior defensive end Nik Rewerts, 6- 5,250, Libby, and senior tackle Jereme Hesse, 6-1, 225, Puyallup, Wash., ended their stellar careers on the first team. Western led the league with 49.5 sacks on the season. Hess to taled 12 sacks to lead the league and Rewerts totaled nine for third on the list. Fellow Dawg lineman Ruley Stingley was sec ond with 10.5. Rewerts led the conference in tackles for loss with 20 for a negative 59 yards. Hess ranked fifth with 12 for a minus 36 yards. Stingley made the second team. A senior de fensive end from Ellensburg, Wash., Stingley (6-4, 245) ranked second in tackles for loss, with 15 for a minus 41 yards. At linebacker, junior Eric Stovernd of Great Falls made the first team from the outside. Inside backer Bryan Arnston, a senior from Butte, made the second team. Stoverud ranked fourth on the total tackle chart with 10.2 total stops per game. Arnston ranked sixth with 9.7 tackles per game and was 11th in tackles for loss with 3.5. In the second, junior safety Nick Prinzing, 6-0, 190, Great Falls, made the first team, and Jake Shrum, 5-11,180, sr., Boise, Idaho, made the second team. Prinzing ranked ninth in passes defended and Shrum third. Prinzing intercepted two balls and broke up five, while Shrum and two picks and nine breakups. Offense Josh Shrum earned first team honors at running back and kick returner. The 5-11, 210, senior, from Boise was a threat as a runner and pass re ceiver. Shrum gained 650 yards on 155 rushes for a 5.2 average and nine touchdowns. He gained 59.2 yards per game on the ground. He added 365 receiving yards and three touchdowns and picked up an other 325 yards on kickoff re turns for 121.8 yards of all pur pose yardage per game. He lead the league with a 25 yard per kickoff return average. Shrum's 12 touchdowns lead the league and he was third in scor ing with 6.5 points per game. Dallas Mock, a senior from Kuna, Idaho, and T Artis, a se nior from Missoula, were first team picks at tight end and wide receiver, while Josh Illig was a second team pick at receiver. Mock caught 40 balls for 520 yards and three touchdowns. He ranked third in receiving yards per game at 52. He added 21 rushing yards. Artis caught three touchdown balls as did Illig. Doing the work up from were first team linemen Toby Beck (6-3, 275) and Ben Snipes (6-2, 305) and second team picks Abe Apilado (6-2, 315) and Mike Schmidt (6-4,295). In all, four of Western's five offensive linemen were honored, j . p . piutt photo Griz crush UNH; host Sam Houston, in Saturday semi The University of Montana Grizzlies blasted New Hamp shire, 47-17, Saturday at Missoula to advance to a semi final battle with Sam Houston State this Saturday. The Griz again host in front of a nation ally televised audience. ESPN2 will broadcast the game which begins at noon. Sam Houston knocked the Griz out of the top-ranking when the teams met at Texas in the early season. The Bearcats racked up 512 yards of total offense in the 41-29 win. The Bearcats rushed for 183 yards despite missing starting tailback Jason Godfrey. Nine of the Bearcat starters were part of two previous losses to Montana. The vic tory propelled the two-time defending NAIA champions into their third consecutive title game at Hardin County, Tenn. They will face St. Francis (Ind.) in the \Rumble by the River”, Dec. 18. A year ago the Saints defeated St. Francis in a semi final game at Helena, 38-14. St. Francis advanced to the championship with a 12-7 semi final win over Georgetown (Ky.). Western takes on the Runnin' Utes of Utah Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The 4-2 Utes are coming off a disappointing loss to Utah State, 71-45, after handling Southern Utah, 65-45. Not a good time to face an embarrassed Utah team, especially just before they take on #15 Arizona. Friday, the Dawgs return home after a month on the road to face Johnson & Wales, an NAIA school from Colorado. Game time is 8 p.m. UM-Western Women's Basketball-The 22nd-ranked Lady Bulldogs host Montana Tech in a non-conference affair Wednesday at 7 p.m. The match with the Frontier Con ference rival does not count in league stand ings. Both the Beavers and Lady Beavers open with Bigfork on Friday and then play Ronan Saturday. The boys play Friday at 3:30 p.m, at the Hamilton Middle School and Saturday at 1 p.m., at Hamilton H.S. The girls face Bigfork Friday at 5:15 p.m. at Hamilton H.S., and then go down the road to Corvallis to play Ronan at 10 a.m. BCHS wrestling-The Beavers were to open their season Tuesday night at home versus Deer Lodge in a non-conference dual at 7 p.m. On the weekend, the varsity will compete at the Mining City Duals in Butte with pool matches against Billings Skyview (10 a.m.), Missoula Hellgate (2:30 p.m.), and Hardin (7 p.m.) on Friday. Saturday's matches will depend on Friday's results. The JV will compete at the Whitehall Duals. Class C Basketball-Twin hosts their own tourney, both boys and girls. Friday Twin takes on Philipsburg, the girls at 4:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30. Saturday they face Ennis, the girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30. Sheridan competes at the Drummond tour ney. Friday both teams face Drummond (girls 4:30, boys 6 p.m.), and Saturday Alberton. Lima hosts Mount Ellis Academy from the Bozeman area Thursday and West Yellowstone Saturday. » V
