The U.S. Gov ernment is the direct cause of these movements. In Latin America the U.S. overthrew Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954 and Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973, both democratically elected. The U.S. Gov ernment has supported Death Squads in Guate mala and in El Salvador, in the war against the poor of those countries. Catholics have been tar geted for murder because of their support of the poor. If the poor had only a little bit better life this would undermine the cheap labor supply for U.S. Transnational businesses. Washington has con temptuously supported pitiless anti-democratic despotism in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nica ragua, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Argentina and Uruguay in the name of anti-communism. So too was the support of the Contra War against Nicara gua paid through Washington in part by selling illegal drugs on the streets of the U.S. Like so much of Washington's humanitarian concerns, U.S. Governments course of action brought about mas sive suffering. The Central American wars in the 1980's with Washington financed death squads and high body counts o f the innocent only means we must take responsibility for our government and change it radically. This only proves our leaders in Washington could not recognize Democracy if they fell over it. Even if we carefully defined to the leaders of this government, the meaning of Democracy they would do everything in their power to oppose it even at home. We as a nation cannot export democracy having never experi enced it ourselves. Latin American accusations against Washington are authentic. But while not forgetting open fraud that is our democracy and nor lets not overestimate American virtue. Let us commit to a truly democratic struggle here at home. The people in other nations of the world can only hope to have their own democracy. (Sources Resource Center for the Americas, Ecumenical Program on Central America & the Caribbean (EPICA) Michael Joseph Francisconi Dillon, Montana At long last.. Wednesday night was a watershed for Dillon and for its city council. After 10 years of work, the council, not without some heartache and hair pulling, finally made the decision that Montana Street South was not only an important project for the city to be involved in, it was a vital one. Although there has been talk o f revitalization o f Dillon's city business district for years, it really began last week when in a series of 6-2 votes the council approved paving the street from Helena to Reeder, build a brand new storm drain system and add curbs and gutters. Then it turned around and revived an issue that had died two weeks before, and approved the efforts o f business owners to set up an SID to cover the cost o f new sidewalks on the east side o f the street for the five block area, including the new visitors center at the end of the street. While no tax dollars are included in that measure, the city will administer the project and the business owners will pay the bill. Many of those property owners, who had rejected a previous measure that would have added some bells and whistles, including lights, went in a strong measure for the sidewalk option. Over 80 percent of the property owners in the district have signed a petition to get the ball rolling again so that the bid for that project can be let at the same as the one for the city's street and storm drain project. When all is done, and especially after a third phase for the west side of the street is completed, with the help of grants the city is applying for, Dillon will have an impressive entry, all the way from the junction of Highway 91 to the front door of the new visitors center. It has not been an easy trip getting there... it spans 10 years and three mayors, but on Wednesday a majority o f the council stepped up and were counted in a project that will have a long lasting and positive impact on all of Dillon. Good for them. American Legion appreciates Challenge To the Editor, Saturday, October 9, 2004, the American Le gion Post 90 was able to complete some much needed work and improvements to their local camp ground located in YVisdom, Montana thanks to the Montana Youth ChalleNGe Program and six of their hard working Cadets. These fine young men completed the physical work they were tasked with and more. They showed the utmost respect and had a positive attitude throughout the day! They set a fine example for the young people of today, and were representatives of future leaders that we can look up to and follow. Thank you ChalleNGe for all that you do, and thank you to those six wonderful Cadets! John T.
