í D illon T ribune - Wednesday, February 1 6 ,2005 B-3 Celebrate Mardi Gras style at Womens Resource Center event Sunday B y E l a i n e S p i c e r Mardi Gras and New Orleans, Louisiana are synonymous in many people's minds, though Mobile, Alabama continues to vie for top billing for the event. In Beaverhead County, the Women's Resource Center has cor nered the Mardi Gras party market, with its annual festivities honor ing the event and raising funds for its programs. Even in Dillon, many party-goers get into the true spirit of Mardi Gras, dressing in costumes, fancy clothes, and mask- Of course, the requisite beads are available at the event, which fells on Sunday, February 20 this year. The party will be held at the Elk's Lodge from 4.30-8:30 p.m. Don't miss it, as it's the closest thing to the real Mardi Gras you can get to around here! Featuring a New Orleans style buffet, a silent auction, raffles, palm and tarot card reading, mimes, face painting, and Dixieland music, it's an event you won't want to miss. Cost is $12 per person or $22 for two. Children ages 10 and under get in free. A no-host bar will be available. Tickets are available at the Women's Resource Center or at the door. About Mardi Gras Mardi Gras means \Fat Tuesday\ and is celebrated on that day of the week, with the date falling between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar, used by the Catholic Church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. Carnival Day is the same as Mardi Gras, the last day of Carnival. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following: • Purple represents justice • green stands for faith • gold stands for power Carnival refers to the season of revelry before Mardi Gras. It begins officially on January 6, which is known as Twelfth Night or Kings' Day, so named because it falls 12 days after Christmas on the day the Wise Men are said to have reached Bethlehem. Carnival celebrations fall into two categories: public and private. The private celebrations are balls, held by clubs called krewes. Some krewes let anyone join, while others are exclusive and made up mostly of \FONOF\ (fine old New Orleans families). The first Carnival ball of the season is always the Twelfth Night Ball, held on Jan. 6. The public celebrations take the form of parades, sponsored by the same krewes that hold the balls for members only. Not every krewe has a parade, although every krewe will throw a party for its mem bers. A very few krewes allow the public to buy tickets to their balls. About 70 groups in a four-parish area around New Orleans hold parades. Every parade has a theme, usually borrowed from mythology, history or Hollywood. Most parades have mock royalty, kings and queens and dukes and duchesses, either drawn from the ranks of the krewe s members or celebrities. All parade riders throw trinkets - beads, doubloons, small toys, candy - from the floats to the crowds. These are called \throws. Parades consist of anywhere from 10 to 40 floats carrying krewe members, marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters and the like. Some parades are small and suburban, others downtown and lavish. Mardi Gras terms Doubloons: Silver-dollar sized con.memorative aluminum coins minted for and given out by Carnival organizations. Rex threw the first one from afloat in 1960. (Earlier such medals were heavier and awarded as ball favors.) A term applied to most organizations participating in Carni val. The following parading organizations are NOT called krewes: Rex, Bacchus, Knights o f Babylon, Knights o f King Arthur, Corps de Napoleon, Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club. Parade: A procession offloats, marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters, flambeaux carriers and the like, that winds through the city on a prescribed route in the few weeks before Mardi Gras. More than 70 parades are held during the Carnival season in a four-parish area around New Orleans. Maskers: A term referring to both the float riders, who nor mally are masked, and those who costume for Mardi Gras. In a race against the chang ing seasons and desperate to find Sacaiawea's people and the horses they needed to cross the Rocky Mountains, the Corps of Discov ery struggled against river cur rents, overcame danger and im pediments, crossed the bison-cov ered prairie lands and traveled in awe of magnificent snow-covered mountains. Through words and slides, the audience joins the explorers and becomes a ptirt of their adven tures over Montanas dynamic landscape. As publishers, authors, and photographers, Rick and Susie Graetz have brought the beauty, geography, and history of Mon tana to the world. Among their best selling books on the state are Lewis and Clark's Montana Trails, and two volumes of Montana East of the Mountains. Susie is a native Montanan from Great Falls, attended the University of Montana, and had an advertising and video produc tion company in the Flathead Val ley. Rick is the founder of Mon tana Magazine, teaches at the University of Montana in Missoula, and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in Geography from the university in 2004.
