Council approves Wall Creek project The Madison-Beaverhead Resource Advisory Commit tee, approved funding $5,000 for a pipeline system near Wall Creek, south of Ennis. The action occurred at the committee’s Feb. 9 meeting in Dillon. The project will help bet ter distribute cattle, keeping them away from sensitive creeks and streams, Mark Petroni, the Forest Service's district ranger in Ennis said. Also contributing to the project are the Rocky Moun tain Elk Foundation ($10,000), the Madison Con servation District ($500), Wall Creek Grazing Associa tion ($3,000), Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (through Sikes Act Funding--$7,500) and the Forest Service ($ 6 , 000 ). “This funding helps im prove riparian areas in the Wall Creek grazing allot ment,” Petroni said. The Madison-Beaverhead Resource Advisory Commit tee also set March 22 as the date for its next meeting, to be held at the Fire Hall in Alder from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. So far the committee has recommended over $25,000 in projects since it began op erations last May. The committee welcomes project proposals from the; public, officials said. The 15 committee mem-; bers were appointed in June; by the U.S. Department of; Agriculture, to three-year terms under the Secure Ru-i ral Schools and Community; Self Determination Act of! 2000 . The committee recom mends how to allocate a por-‘ tion of federal funding that Madison and Beaverhead counties receive. The law directs that funds be spent on projects that maintain or remove roads and trails, improve soil and forest ecosystem health, re store watersheds, improve habitat for wildlife and fish, control weeds, and reestab lish native animals and plants. Projects may be on pri vate land, but must benefit federal land and must also pass muster under an array of federal environmental laws. Proposals for the March 22 meeting are due by March 16.
