Section 36 T.14S. R.2W Common School Trust (East Centennial Mountains) The primary objective of the proposed project is to improve forest health through the salvage of dead/dying timber recent- ly impacted by insects and disease infestations and overstocked forests. Douglas -fir, spruce, lodge - pole pine and subalpine fir sawlog timber would be harvested from ap- proximately 145 acres of state land. Existing roads on private and state lands will be used and maintained to BMP standards and some new PUBLIC NOTICES temporary road construc- tion will be necessary to access proposed harvest units. Three SPA -124 permits are anticipated for stream crossings to be obtained from MT DFWP Other activities planned with the proposed action include; closure of tem- porary roads, a noxious weed mitigation plan, property line delineation, and burning of slash piles. The proposed salvage harvest is in accordance with State Statute 77 5 207, the DNRC's intent is to salvage timber be- fore there is substantial value loss. Additionally the proposed harvest would contribute to the DNRC's sustained yield as mandated by state statute 77-5-222. The Limited Access timber sale rule applied in this case allows for the department to negotiate a sale of timber not to exceed 1 million board feet. Centennial Wood Products of Lima, MT (operator/logger) has obtained exclusive access through adjacent private property owner to per- form this timber harvest. The proposal is in the general vicinity of Odell Creek, approximately 2 air miles east of the small town of Lakeview. This area is known to contain numerous wildlife spe- cies and fish bearing streams run through the project area. Protective measures to fulfill the endangered species act, and protect other environ- mental considerations, would be used. The proposed action would likely be imple- mented in the early sum- mer of 2014 and be com- pleted by 2016. The DNRC is in the scoping phase of the proj- ect environmental assess- ment so all volumes and acreages are preliminary estimates. Time is of the essence given the limited access and salvage timber conditions.
