EASTERN MONTANA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION June 3, 1949 Page Two THE STAFF Editor._ Otis Packwood Assistant Editor Don Young Business Manager _ Sene Peterson Advertising Mary Hochmath Sports Editor Bill Pate Features Shirley Baker Society Editor Joy Starner News Editor Don Zupan Humor Marlin Payne Student Affairs Virginia Kyger EDITORIAL By Ohs Packwood This is the last issue of EMCOE in it's first season of publication. Now is a time when EMCOE'S staff and the entire school pause a moment before entering the final swirl of activity as the school year ends. A great porpor- tion of our student body will leave Eastern for the next step up the ladder to success. As these people depart from our campus, they will carry with them some of the warmth, friendliness, and spirit of Eastern. But each one of them, whether he has been an Easterner for one, two, of four years, has given the school a part of his life. Other colleges, teaching posi- tions, and other occupations of various descriptions will claim the persons that are our class- mates today. It will seem nearly impossible for those students re- turning to Eastern next year to manage the affairs of the school without the aid of this years graduating classes. Some way the activities of our school will con- tinue to function, however. Eastrn shall continue to grow and prosper. As the years go by, Easteners will be more proud of their old alma mater, Eastern Montana College of Education. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE It is always with a feeling of mingled sadness and pride that we come to the end of the college year. This has been a most active and forward-looking session. The success we have achieved has been due to a very large degree to the excellent spirit of coopera- tion by all students and particu- larly those who are graduating. The faculty and the president wish to thank the graduates for their sincere interest in the affairs of the school. Rest assured that Eastern will appreciate active support in the future. It should also be kept in mind that the alumni are always welcome at all college functions. We all ex- tend our most sincere wishes for a happy and successful future. A. G. Peterson, President MRS. FLORENCE BROWN Director of Student Activities and Faculty Advisor to EMCOE INTRODUCING THE SPONSOR In this, our last edition of EMCOE for the year, we, the members of the staff wish to extend our sincere appreciation and best wishes to Mrs. Florence Brown who has done such a com- petent and understanding job in sponsoring EMCOE during its first year. You do? Well, let's find out. The following quiz has been ar- ranged to set the reels of memory a rollin'. Zero wrong is consid- ered excellent, one wrong is fair, and more than one wrong might class you as an incompetent ob- server. The lad is a graduate of the Bridger High School, class of 1936. He served five years in the U.S. Army. He was a medical clerk at Fort Knox, first, and later served as an evacuation registrar in Ger- many and Austria. This lad is the able President of the Student Council and as an added feature, he enjoys going to dances stagg. He feels all the girls will get a break this way. MISS HERMINE ROBERTS Art Instructor MISS ROBERTS TO RETIRE Miss Hermine Roberts is retir- ing from the faculty of Eastern. The loss of this veteran of Eastern's Art Departmen shall be great. Back in 1927, Miss Roberts was called to Eastern from a teaching postion in Indiana University. Establishing an Art Department in the then new branch of the University of Montana was her job. Miss Roberts attended Herron Art Institute, DePauw University, Chicago School of Applied Art, and Indianapolis Normal Sschool before she came to Eastern. While she served in the Art Department, she spent two summers at the University of Oregon Art School under scholarship by Carnegie Institute. One of the highlights of Miss Roberts, career occurred during the summer of 1937. That year she attended the World Art Con- gress in Paris and toured eleven foreign countries. In 1946 winter and spring quarters while on leave to re- cover from a major illness, Miss Roberts visited Mexico. This was one of the most interesting times of her life. The future is indefinite, ac- cording to Miss Roberts, but she is sold on Montana, where she says she has spent the happiest years of her life. Eastern's students of this year and so many previous years join to wish Miss Roberts complete happiness for many years to come. tions received, according to Bob Leone, Senior class president. All students who made reservations were asked to contact Bob in order to receive the money they paid for tickets. Mrs. Brown came to Eastern at the biginning of the winter quarter this year as Director of Student Activities. Previous to this time, she was Principal of the high school in White Sulphur Springs, Mor tana. Perhz...ps the busiest person at Eastern, Mrs. Brown is active in all student activities, dances, and parties. She is co-sponsor of the Student Council, sponsor of both EMCOE and the RIMROCK, and is a teacher of American and English literature. Even so, she always has time for friendly East- ern students. Her industrious nature and friendliness make Mrs. Brown an \Easterner\ to be proud of. LOOK AT THE BIRDIE Eastern's man behind the cam- era is one Hugh Bristor. EMCOE photos this quarter for the most part have been Hugh's handiwork. The schedule of Mr. Bristor's day goes something like this: school work 4 hours, job at Ben- netts 41/2 hours, chow 11/2 hours, work on photography 7 hours, sleep 8 hours. That totals 25 hours doesn't it? Oh well, let him worry about it. We predict a very interesting future for Hugh. In a matter of only ten years our photographic friend shall be working for some huge corporation as a corporation lawyer. Photography shall be just a sideline hobby. Social life?
