I, NO. 10 BILLINGS, MONTANA DECEMBER 9, 1949 CHRISTMAS PLANS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Eastern Elementary School will present the Nativity program as their Christmas observance again this year. The program will be presented the week of Decem- ber 19. This program will set up a tradition at Eastern and will be presented each year. During the week of December 14 the children in the Elementary School will gather in the halls every morning to sing Christmas carols. There will be organized a selected group to be known as the Junior Christmas Choir. This group will come to the Admin- istration building during Christ- mas week to sing .carols. Miss Ruth Harvey is general chairman of the Christmas activ- ities; the committees are as fol- lows: Music: Mrs. Shirley Voyta, Ed- ward White, Dona Dunn, Maureen Demars and Irene Donohoe. Costumes: Miss Laura Preik- sazs, Betty Lou Soderquist, Ruth Jimmerson and Miss Harvey. Stage Properties and Invita- tions: Mrs. Helen Vest, Mrs. Olive Cummings, and Mrs. Ann Sco- field, Mae Richard, Henry Du- Garm and Lucille Kimball. The children in the Elementary School will not exchange gifts among themselves; instead, they will each bring a gift which will be given to the Public Welfare office for Christmas distribution. Mrs. Olive Cummings and Mrs. Ann Scofield are in charge of the gift program. BUSINESS CLUB The Eastern Business Club had as its main speaker for this month Mr. Buck, who is executive secre- tary of the Billings Commerical Club. Mr. Buck spoke to the group on what the average business man expects from those entering of- fices as employees. The meeting was held in the Student Union room and refresh- ments were served by Miss Berg- strom and Miss Wall. NOTICE! Pictures for the 1950 Rimrock will be taken on January 5 and 6. The photographers will be in room 103 all day each day. Watch the bulletin board for the assignment of your time. MARGUERITE SOULE SHOE- MAKER; DEEP-SEA DIVER Unusual, wasn't it? A woman deep-sea diver! EASTERN heard Mrs. Marguerite Soule Shoemaker report on \Exploring the Marine Wonderworld\ at , the assembly hour on Wednesday, December 7. Mrs. Shoemaker's original in- terest in diving was the result of the desire to improve her effici- ency as a lifesaver. She worked during summer vacations as a guard at swimming beaches where she witnessed tragedies which could have been avoided had she been trained in helmet diving. She discovered marine life to be even more fascinating than land life. Throughout the Bahama Is- land, the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys this naturalist has studied tropical reef fish, octopi, sharks, skates as well as corals, gargonias and other polyp-like creatures of the sea. NOTICE See the bulletin board for the announcement of Merit Exam- inations for positions with the Montana Unemployment Com- pensation Commission, Depart- ment of Public Welfare. EVERDAY AT EASTERN Little anecdotes have been re- ported which have made the Christmas Formal long-remem- bered. Returning the coat hangers to the girls' dressing room in the Commercial Club, Tom'etta was slightly embarrassed when he walked in on a female. Backing out, he thrust the hangers at Bambi and gasped, \You take them . in, Barn,\ and dashed up the stairs. At the beginning of the dance, the mistletoe beneath the arch- way wasn't noticed much, but the grand march gave the group the right idea. Now that it's all over, we can confess that the \mistle- toe\ was holly with painted white berries. Genuine mistletoe could- n't be found at any of the floral shops so we had to manufacture our own! \Flash\ Bristor was around with his camera again, stationed by the mistletoe he got some pretty good shots! By the way, \Hugh does the pai-ty com- mittee get a cut of the profits? Thanks to Chris Glantz for the very descriptive tcur of Billings Senior High. PUBLICATIONS Dorothy Cohn Catherine Freeberg Adrian Langstaff Bill Pate Mr. L. Cooper (Faculty Advisor) remains of the Christmas Formal are the memories. Everything's done but the shouting, and most of the freshmen are still too weak to do that! Although the job of decorating was tough, the Frosh tackled it with much spirit and determination. They are to be commended for their work in making the Christmas Formal of 1949 a huge success. Les Heins portrayed his mag- nificent artistic ability in the two wall murals. Donna Bly and followers were responsible for the big-as-life snowmen at the door. Chris Glantz did a fine job with her snow and boughs around the room. Jack Miller and Harry Manuel worked terrifically on wiring the boughs from the center of the ceiling to the walls. (Jack was also in charge of changing the mistletoe.) Pat Carty decorated her check room very impressively. Kathleen Baker and Caryl Schrunk did a scrumptious job on refreshments. Joan Hargraves used her mar- velous talents for the publicity posters and signs around the halls. Dick Sitzman and Walt Mere- dith nearly burst building the false ceiling and the bandstand. Last, but not least, Tom \Cat\ Keating almost broke his neck Of course these efforts would have been in vain if it weren't for the cooperation of the spon- sors, Mr. Weichert, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Harshfield, Mr. Johnson, Stevie, Oscar and the following decoration committee: Jerry Swi- hart, Rose Barney, Marilyn Big- gerstaff, Wilma Dowlin, Babe Becker, Jerine Grimstad, Lynn Erb, Yvonee Rumph, Marcella Dotson, Norman Christianson, John Mason, Betty Zeiler, Lor- raine Ness, Tom Morledge, Bill Young, Don Vladic, Jane Twitch- ell, Nancy Bennett, Pat Bertle- son, Dottie Ward, Delores Tos- sitt, Ramona L i m i n g, Roger Glenn, Joe O'Green, Francis Mur- phy, Al Staley, Al Foster, Calvin Tilleson, Jan Hartley, Jan Ses- sions, and Virginia Viccinus, Frances Petroff, Yvonne Rumph, Ramona Liming.
