Sweetheart Ball Tomorrow Night 9:00 I M1 C Lorraine Ness Rosetta Rush Rita Christensen Jewel Mattson Jackie Lewis VOL. 4, NO. 15 BILLINGS, MONTANA FEBRUARY 22, 1951 EMCOE Chorus Slates Spring Presentation EASTERN TO HOLD FORENSIC TOURNEY E.M.C.E. has sent bids to nine Montana colleges to participate in the annual Intercollegiate For- enscis Tournament at Eastern, April 6 and 7, Ray Harshfield announced. Featured at the two-day meet will be a parlimentary type dis- cussion of the debate question. In this event participants will choose the side of the issue they favor and sit on that side of the room. As the debate continues they may change sides as their opinions change. Awards will be given for oral interpretation, debate, oratory extemperaneous speaking. At the banquet planned in the cafeteria on the final day trophies will be awarded. Afterwards all out-of-town participants will ac- company the Eastern students to the Spinsters' Spree. As plans to draft eighteen year olds as well as older college stud- ents are being pushed through Congress, the U. S. Naval Re- serve has announced a program that will enable Reserve mem- bers and younger college stud- ents to continue their education. The Reserve is instituting a program which they call ROC. This is a Reserve Officers' Can- didate program. Any member of the U. S. Naval Reserve who is attending college is eligible. If you are attending college but are not in the Re- serve you can join if you are under 181/2 years old. A Navy reviewing board will be in Billings on Friday, February 23, to select candidates for this CALENDAR OF EVENTS February 22, Thursday 12:30 p.m.—Ski Club, 207 4:00 and 8:00 p.m.—The Black Pirate, with Doug- las Fairbanks, Sr. February 23; Friday Decorating starts for the Sweetheart Ball. 9:00 p.m.—SWEETHEART BALL After the dance—all sopho- mores help clean up. Banquet Planned in Honor of Coach, Team The E.M.C.E. basketball ban- quet will be held Saturday, March 10, at the Commercial Club. Ban- quet time is 7 p.m. This banquet will serve to hon- or the varsity, junior varsity, and Coach \Shorty\ Alterowitz. A (Continued on Page 2) Students Conduct Classes Yesterday instructors turned their morning classes over to students while they took part in the first of the series of faculty meetings known as \retreats.\ It was decided that the prev- ious meeting time wasn't enough to thoroughly cover the problems facing the school. From now on this Wednesday morning sched- ule will occur once a month. District NAIB Tourney To Be Held in Billings The Billings Shrine will be the site of the district NIAB tourna- ment, March 6 and 7. The original plan called for the first two teams in the Montana College Confer- ence and for two out of three of the following; Montana, Montana State, and Idaho State to par- ticipate in the tourney. Northern will end the season no lower than second place in the conference and they are ineligible to partici- pate so it will numbers 1 and 3 teams fro mthe small conference. To determine which of the three larger schools are to be repre- sented at the tourney, they will play four games with each team and the two with the best per- centages will enter. The winner of the tourney will represent this district at the na- tional NAIB tournament in Kan- sas City. This tournament is for four-year colleges. M Club Votes Amendment The M Club voted an amend- ment to its constitution at the last regular meeting. The amend- ment read: \Any person missing two consecutive meetings would be suspended from M Club for the remainder of the year and could only be reinstated by pe- tition the following year.\ Harry Manuel was elected vice presi- dent to replace Dick Sitzman, who left for military service. NAVAL RESERVE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR OFFICERS CANDIDATE PROGRAM The spring presentation of the E.M.C.E. chorus under the direction of Mr. Ralph M. Kent will be \The Last Words of Christ\ by Dubois. Soloists, chosen last Monday, are Kathleen Baker, Bonnie Cattnach, Betty Jean Schultz, Jo Severson, sopranos; Bill Acheson, Ray Endres, Carl Good, David Hartley, Bob Whaley, tenors, and Gene Brown, Hugh Morton, baritones. Assistant conductors are Brown and Endres. Accompanists will be Miss Cattnach and George Snell. The first appearance of the sixty-voice robed choir will be in Hardin, Sunday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m., at the Hardin high school. A combination program will be presented with the Hardin high school band under the di- rection of Mr. Frank Solozzi. The presentation will be for the fi- nancial benefit of the Hardin band. A second appearance of the choir will be in the E.M.C.E. audi- torium, Sunday, March 11, at 4:30 p.m., as a vesper service. Miss Schultz will direct the voices of the Lab school third and fourth graders who will present several selections. \The best vocal material we have ever had will be featured in this presentation. Indications are that 'The Seven Last Words of Christ' is well worth hearing,\ stated Mr. Kent.
