Johnson recently stated that many students have expressed an in- terest in the National Defense Stu- dent Loan Plan. The following ques- tions and answers should help ex- plain this program, Johnson said, for there are special scholarship provi- sions for student borrowers plan- ning on public secondary, elemen- tary teaching, and public school ad- ministrative careers. One question that has been asked is, what are the terms of a National Defense Student Loan? The college student loan administrator, in this case M. E. Johnson, may loan no more than $1,000 to any one student per year, and no student may receive more than $5,000 in loans. One year after the borrower is no longer a full time college student, three percent interest will accumulate, and repay- ment starts on the balance of the loan. Military service, up to three years, will prolong the beginning of repayment and interest accrual. Another question: Who may bor- row from the loan fund? Needy stu- dents who are either enrolled, or are about to be enrolled in full-time col- lege grad courses during the regular academic year, where the loan pro- gram is in affect may apply. At East- ern, the business manager will de- termine the financial need of a bor- rower. This assumes that students are in academic good standing. Age is not a factor. He must attain satisfac- tory progress towards a degree, and maintain good conduct, according to school rules.
