I Wednesday, October 28. 1981 I.Ati(l' ~--3 ----~-----------------------------------editorials----------------------------------------- Frosh · go undefeated · , By Ed Byrne Sports Writer The fre~hman football team is looking good this year with Hellgate's first unde- feated season since 1973 when the soph- mores went 5-0 . Besides the sophmores in 73 , the freshmen are the only team in Hellgate ' s history to go undefeated in football. Coach Dan Gilman and Coach Ron Jones both agree that this is the best over- all freshman team that either of them hav~ ever coached. After coming off a 36- 6 win last Friday against Stevensville, their record was • boosted to ·7-0. This is the best all-time record in Hellgate's his-- tory. Coach Dan Gillman and coach Ron Jones both agree that this is the best over- all freshmen team they ' ve ever coached . \Before we've · had 15-20 really good players, while this year they're all good .\ said Jones. Gillman also commented \all the play- ers are equal. \ The coaches feel so strong about this that they aren ' t even giving out an \Outstanding Player Award .\ Powder Puff cancelled The Hellgate girls; Powder · Puff Football team has forfeited to both Big Sky and Sentinel after the girls failed to . find . a coach . Several weeks ago , the team met and discussed the need for a coach and who they might be able to get. Vice Prin- cipal Don Lawston said, \They ( the girls ) have gone around and tried to get a teacher or faculty member to coach them .\ There had been about 20 girls who signed up at the meeting along with several others who . didn ' t know about it. Ron Jones started th~ program about six- teen years ago and coached it himself for the first fifteen• years. In those fifteen years , Jones had ten wins and five losses. Jones said, \We started the game for the Hellgate and Sen- tinel Girls Pep Club back in 1966 .\ The average turn out was . about 55-60 girls, varying from year to . Year . \Before the games, we would all go out to breakfast at a house of pancakes or some- thing,\ said Jones. \Sometimes . we would have 900 or more fans at the game. The game was al- ways held the day before the Hellgate-Sentinel · homecoming football game, and was consid- ered a preparation for the home- coming game .\ Jones add that after 15 years of coaching it was time to let someone else in there. Jones said, \I met a lot of real good friends and had a lot of fun and success.\ Last year Norman Jacobson decided to coach the team after no one else would take the job . This year , Jacobson said, \I just don ' t have the time to coach the Powder Puff.\ Now the future of Powder Puff is questionable, because right now there aren't any candidates for a coach this year . next year or any other year to come. Editor's note: At press time this story was accurate. At the last moment, Wayne Seitz volun- teered to coach the Powder Puff girls' football team. The team has three practices to prepare for the game with Sentinel Fri- day afternoon. ~1'1'1'1'1'111111111111 I GET GASSED AT ~ a,,.,.,.,...,.,,.,.,,.,,.,,,.~ . ~ UNIVERSITY i I. Gilman also commented, \I feel all the players are equal. \ The coaches feel so str~mgly about this that they aren ' t even giving an \Outstanding Player A ward\ this year . One of Gilman's and Jones' main con- cerns is to get everyone into the games. This, they said has been accomplished the last couple of games. \Against Stevens- ville ,\ Jones said, \we got all forty five players in.\ Jones and Gilman feel this is what Freshman football is all about. that and teaching them the fundamentals . When askec:i about the freshman foot- ball team's success this year Don Harb- augh said , \I'm really happy for them but I hope it's. just a beginning .\ The coaches and Harbaugh said they would like to see it as a four year program . The coaches agree that this is Hellgate 's main p.rob- Jem, the freshmen come out their first year then don't return their sophmore year . ~ost of the coaches seem to feel that the main reason for this is that a lot ' of the players get jobs and buy cars. An- other reason is, according to Gillman \ some players just don't have the devo- tion.\ ~eanwhile the girls · basketball are happy with a 7-4 record , and just having an overall good year . \We're just trying to leach them (freshmen girls) the funda- mentals and build a future varsity team .\ said Coach Jim Heydon . . He also commented that freshman Kelly Davis is out for the year after ·she was involved in a motorcycle accident. \Outside this, injuries have been few,\ said Heydon . The girls basketball team has about five games left after playing Anaconda last Saturday . ~ost of them said they plan on returning nexf year to play either soph· more or J-V basketball . But until then and during the summer they will probably attend the Grizzly Cage Camp · and / or Hellgates Hays Hoop Camp. This last summer four of the freshmen attended the Grizily camp while forward Julie Hangar was the only freshman to attend · Hellgate's Hays ' Hoop Camp. Hangar also attended the Grizzly Cage Camp , and said she would definitely go out for the team next year . · sub varsity------- While the sophomore football team fell to Kalispell last Satur- day with a 52-14 l9ss , the fresh- man team has gone undefeated after beating Stevensville 36-6. The girl's freshman, sopho- more and J. V. beat Anaconda there last Saturday . The fresh- man won 64-14, sophomores won 38-27 and J.V . won 34-19. The freshmen now have five games remaining . They are Columbia Falls Oct. 30 , Sentinel Nov. 6, - Big Sky Nov. 7 , Anaconda Nov . 12, and Havre Nov. 13 at Havre . The sophomores , likewise , have five games.
