Girls finish season 0-2 Tllur.s<tay _ ; October 28 ~ 1~a2 ( LdnCE sports 13) Puffers play for fun, notwins By Lori Mattina Staff Writer Powderpuff football has been a tradition at Hellgate for 16 years. From the time - Big Sky was added to the Missoula County High School system in 1980, the attitude towards the game has changed. In 1966, Hellgate pep club challenged the Sentinel pep club to a football game, said former powderpuff coach Ron Jones. They planned it for the night be- fore the boy's football game against Sentinel, and that is how · the powderpuff football tradition started. Jones said that on the day of the game against Sentinel, pow- derpuff players were introduced and presented with awards at an assembly. He said that game tur- nouts were terrific. \They would surround the field up to three and four people deep. There was standing room only,\ he said. KGVO radio covered the games. After the pep club challenges _ wore off, Jones said he took only the best girls for the powderpuff team. \We were in the game, going for it, and we got into it,\ he said. With three schools I wasn't • too excited about coaching,\ said Jones. \I've been coaching boys for 18 years,\ he said, \And you might as well practice to win.\ Jones said that when he was coaching powderpuff they would get in a good amount of practice before the game. He said that this practice time is necessary, and with three schools they would have to get in that time between games . \It would be too time consuming, \ he .. saj!\, From 1966 to 1980, the Hell- gate powderpuff team won ten games and lost five . This year the powder puff players did not do as well as when Jones was coaching. They were defeated by both Sentinel and Big Sky on the 11th and 13th · of October. Jones said he quit coaching powderpuff simply because he was tired of it. He had been doing it for 14 years, and \Like any job it takes time away,\ Jones said . In the past year or two, a coach was never found. This year, assistant principal Don Lawston asked math teacher Tom Ross to coach the powder- puff team. He and English teacher Greg Lenihan took on the task. \We both figured we would enjoy it,\ said Lenihan. ''The thing that has been the hardest is the lack of football knowledge,\ said Ross, \But we both have learned a lot.\ Both coaches and a majority of the players feel satisfied with the season regardless of their re- cord . \We felt bad about losing for about five minutes,\ ~idLe nihan . \Then I think most people forgot about it.\ \Powderpuff was a blast,\ said senior Lori Mueller. \I wanted to be involved in more team sports since this was my last year . I liked the coaches, and made new friends, \ she said. Freshman Tonya Harding said she never played before, but had fun learning. \I thought we did really good for as many peoplt we had who hadn't played be- fore.\ Harding said. Other girls also said that Hellgate could have won, and that there was a definate improvement from game one .to game two. Powderpuff football is a non- sanctioned sport, and the girls now buy their own jerseys. They play one hand touch, and in the past have accepted two hand touch. The rules have remained much the same since 1966, but a more relaxed attitude has seemed to have taken over powder puff football. Maybe the competition is not as important as the enjoyment they get out of it. Bob LaCasse photo . An unidentified Sentinel powderpuff player tries to find 'running room against Hellgate.
