A&E Did you L7low? Tlte sce~te in \I1jango Unchained\ whe~·e Leo DiCap1-io -8 ltand is bleeding was an accident. 71te blood was t\eal. 15 Quentin Tarantino: Director, artist, provocateur Kira Means A&E Editor Quentin Tarantino's most recent film, Django Unchained, has critics reeling. With his familiar use of shock value and his dynamic storytelling, the film contin- ues many of the traditions of his previous filmography. Django Unchained tells the story of a slave named Django who, along with a German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz, sets out on an adventure to seek revenge on the kidnappers of his wife, Broomhilda. The movie's plot is gripping, the action is expertly choreographed and it's full of laughs. However, the film's content is oftentimes provocative and many audiences would find the extensive violence and blatant racism off-putting. Quentin Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, but moved to California at the age of 2. He dropped out of high school, work- ing, instead, in a video store. It was there that Tarantino was intro- duced to the magic of film. Quick- ly, Tarantino found inspiration in Kung-Fu and Spaghetti Western films and shortly afterward, he began making movies himself. Tar- , antino is quoted as saying \When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, 'No, I went to films.\' Tarantino's first experience in the movie industry was when he wrote a screenplay that would result in the movie True Romance. After his experience in screenwriting, Tarantino began to direct mov- ies-first Reservoir Dogs, then Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bilt Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds. Taran- tino's subject material has been incredibly diverse throughout his career- from Holocaust films to Horror to crime films- but his directorial style is unmistakably, unfailingly Tarantino. Tarantino has traditionally specialized in witty dialogue, lush storylines and exciting action scenes and Django is no different. Although Django lacks some of Tarantino's trade- mark sharp dialogue and is much more focused on plot and action, his directorial patterns can still be seen. Django Unchained is yet another masterpiece created by Quentin Tarantino-thought-provoking, gripping and en- joyable to watch. Django has also been heavily criticized for its exaggerated and oftentimes nearly unwatchable racism. Although many of the film's fans argue that Tarantino was simply being historically accurate, other critics say that Tar- antino went overboard. After alt Tarantino is no stranger to controversy. Much of Tarantino's directing largely revolves around the philosophy that shock value is, welt valuable. For example, during many particularly obscene scenes of Django Unchained, the audience could be heard nervously laughing. While some would argue that laughter at such an inappropri- ate time is not acceptable, no matter the level of audience discomfort, Tarantino would probably be proud. To make an audience uncomfortable requires them to think about a controversial subject and see that it is bla- tantly wrong. This philosophy has propelled Tarantino's career throughout the years and continues to be a large reason for his cinematic success. In addition, it has earned him the title of provocateur. Tarantino has also been known for his pro- vocative natures in person. His personality in interviews is oftentimes considered as rude and narcissistic, but many of the best artists of all time are. · Quentin Tarantino movies are most definite- - ly not for the squeamish and, yes, many times he pushes boundaries to lengths that the public perceives as too far, but to deny his brilliance is to deny the abilities of a great artist. Tarantino, like any other great artist, is successful because he's different. Continually breaking ground in the world of cinema, Tar- antino is truly o~e of the greatest filmmakers of our genera- tion.
