Since 1935 the Dunkel Sports Research Service, Inc., of New York, has been rating all college basketball teams as a basis for forecasting results of games. Accuracy in predicting outcomes of 3,150 games last year was 79.2%. A team’s rating is determined by its performance during the past season and carried over from year to year. If a team averages five points better than its opposition whose rating is 40, then the team’s rating will be 45. A team rating 45 should defeat one rating 30 by 15 points. SNARLS The current rage among sports writers is, by a complicated system known only to an intimate few, to select the outstanding grid team in the nation. • Last week in the Montana Stand ard it was proved, or was it? that the University of Montana Grizz lies were superior to Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. • Well, old pop is going whole bag or none and prove that our beloved Bulldogs are superior to Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. I believe I am throwing a bombshell into the known method of selecting teams — this method will be an epic much the same as the “T ” Formations. It has already been adopted by the Gopher Hole Gazette and the End Gate Echo. • Some writers take comparative scores: you can’t do that with the Bulldogs; it’s just a little too too disheartening. Some experts take into consideration the teams they have played; you can’t do that with the Bulldogs because they haven’t played anyone who has beaten any one else so-o-o we can’t use that line of attack. • Ah! a light, at last a solution! I reach far into my tattered vest poc ket and extract my lead two-headed dime and slowly repeat the follow ing words; notice I said words, not verse, stamping left foot to tune of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”— Heads, heads on the floor Who is best of them all In the East, North, South, or West If it’s heads, M.S.N.C. is best. • I tossed the coin high into the air and when it fell (be sure a carpet is on the floor so a riot is avoided) look—if it’s heads, flip again so the Be Sure to Drop In On Us! DILLON Bowling Center Top Swimmers Honored at Party Top participants in the woman’s interclass marathon swimming meet were Charlene Mullen, Catherine Helterline, and Marjorie Rydberg for the freshman-junior team; Joyce Aughney, Jeanne Covalt, and Lucy Bryson as sophomore-senior winners. A party in honor of the winning team, freshman-sophomore, was giv en Monday evening, December 1, in the gym by the sophomore-senior, losing team. BULLDOGS OPEN COLLEGIATE SEASON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5 Bulldogs open the season by s tart ing with an abbreviated “Bums of the Month” campaign. The Great Falls College of Education, playing their first season of intercollegiate basketball, will be the victim. Hope they will not become too disillusion ed. Great Falls College of Educa tion—you never heard of it? Neither did I, and we’re not alone. I’ll ven ture to guess there are 495,000 peo ple in Montana who are even less informed than we. Golden Gophers will not feel slight ed or cheated. Thus you have a fool-proof method for selecting lead ing grid teams. It proves without a shadow of doubt that our Bulldogs are the leading team in the nation. Or does it?
