By Christine Nelson Staff Reporter Groundhog Day, President’s Day, Valentine’s Day... Fighting Saints Day? Not only did the Carroll College Saints make school history by becoming National Champions, but on January 27 at a Helena city commission meeting, they shattered the record books again. Mayor Jim Smith officially rec ognized Coach Mike Van Deist and the Saints for their accomplishments and proclaimed January 27th, 2003 as Fighting Saints Day. “It was awesome to stand in front of the Mayor, he’s a Carroll graduate, and also for our team to get an ovation,” said Van Deist, who was recently named NAIA Coach of the Year.“There were a lot of goosebumps going around, and I was very impressed with the cer emony. There’s still a lot of recognition going on, a month after the win.” Van Deist’s phone is ringing off the hook with congratulations from Carroll fans, the Helena community, and Carroll alumni. Congressman Max Baucus and Governor Judy Martz have also sent their congratulations. Martz has invited the team to the Capitol, where they will be introduced on the floor of the Senate, and meet Montana’s representa tives. The Saints football team was also invited to sign autographs at Dillard’s on January 19th. “It was amazing to see how many people of all ages showed up,” says Cory Perzinski, sen ior outside linebacker. “It was a great way to give back to the community for supporting us.” The signs of the community’s support are everywhere. From the purple and gold ribbon- clad trees lining North Benton Avenue, to the praising billboards of local businesses, it is clear that all of Helena is caught in the tide of celebration. At Carroll, a Touchdown Dance was held in the teams honor.“I had such a blast at the dance,” said Jana Cousineau, a freshman soci ology major. “It was a great way for the school to get the students involved in the Saints win, and a great way to celebrate.” Shane Larson, first team offensive lineman, has also been celebrating by spending a lot of time with his friends and teammates. “When we got back from Tennessee we celebrated with people in the Helena Community. Then over Christmas break we celebrated with our communities back home. Now we are back at school celebrating with our team and with fel low Carroll students.” The Carroll staff is also thrilled over the football team’s victory. Registrar Mary Pat Dutton, one of the Saint’s most enthusiastic fans, celebrated the win by painting the letters of “National Champions” on the windows of O’Connell Hall. “I was standing on President Trebon’s desk, in my skirt, painting on the windows and I remember thinking, this isn’t in my job description,” said Dutton. The team also celebrated their win in the community during the fire truck ride through downtown Helena on February 6. After the team’s triumphant ride, they once again cele brated with their fellow students in the campus center. The team has picked out a design for their “Rumble in the River” championship rings. The Saint’s Shoppe has NAIA Championship apparel for all students to celebrate including t- shirts, sweatshirts and hats. Limited edition signed footballs and helmets from the championship team are now available online. There are only 100 signed footballs and 10 signed helmets available. AWARDS: Coach Van Diest accepts one award of many after the Carroll College Fighting Saints win the NAIA Championship! Congratulations to our fighting Saints! Hopefully they will bring home another trophy next year. The Fighting Saints have already started winter lifting in preparation for next season. The team has the support of all of its fans, the Helena Community, Carroll students and staff. We are all looking forward to next September, when we can once again fill the stadium to watch the returning champs attempt a repeat. Go Saints! ■ Carroll College All-Americans!
