Page 16 Carroll Fighting Saints tear up the courts The women dominate By Michael McMahon Staff Reporter Well worth the celebration There’s a new show at this school, basket ball fans. On Feb. 7, 2003, the Carroll College women’s basketball team was 9-13, pushing through a difficult season. One year later, on Feb. 7, 2004, the Lady Saints won their 22nd game, tying a record for the most victories in Carroll history. What sparked this remarkable turnaround? Many factors aided in the Saints’ success, but a great deal of credit must be given to first year head coach, Shawn Nelson. Nelson, a ’96 Carroll graduate in sociology, spent the last seven years working as an assis tant to men’s coach, Gary Turcott. Upon the retirement of longtime women’s coach and athletic director Jim Gross, Nelson saw an opportunity to become a head coach. After encouraging discussions with Gross and other members of the athletic department, Nelson made his decision to apply for the job. “When you get a chance to coach at a place like Carroll, you jump at it,” Nelson said. Indeed, the head women’s position was appealing for many reasons. The returning team displayed potential and talent, as well as many intangibles. “Coach Gross did a great job recruiting,” Nelson said, shifting the credit for his athletes. “It’s not like the cupboards were empty.” Continued on page 16 . . . A Talking Saints see another Regional Championship on horizon By Katie Lang Staff Reporter The Saints are talking and they are worth listening to. “We are in a positive position to bring home the 14th regional championship,” said senior Diane Wehrman. If the team wins the upcoming tournament in Spokane, Wash, it will emerge as regional champions for the 14th consecutive year. High achievement is by no means new for this Carroll team. The Carroll Talking Saints have won 13 Northwest Regional Championships with many members winning national titles. In 1999, the Carroll Forensics team placed number one in the nation. “The team is consistently ranked nationally,” said former Talking Saint Brett Clark. “They have an incredible record.” Clark participated in forensics at Carroll for four years from 1999 to 2003. He is impressed with this year’s successes. “They have come really far,” he said. The team has improved its national ranking from 19th last year to fifth this year. “The difference is that we’re nationally competitive in debate,” said sophomore Scott Peterson. For the first time since 1999 the Talking Saints won the United States Air Force Academy Classic Forensics Tournament. This feat clearly demonstrates the team’s via bility. “Not on our watch,” said junior Talking Saint Annie Heffelfinger. This is the traditional team motto meaning this team will maintain the record. Every year their director candidly reminds them that this could be the year. They could be the team to witness the end of an era.’Tt is the phrase that really keeps us going,” said Heffelfinger. “We know it could all end, but it’s not going to happen to us, not to this team.” Keep talking Saints!
