Lady Saints end a record breaking season Basketball team goes down in Carroll history By Shawn Baune Staff Reporter Dreams were accomplished. Then they were crushed in one night. The Carroll College Lady Saints were invited to the 24th Annual NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament despite losing in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference tourna ment. Their high hopes were quickly put down when they lost in the first round of the tourna ment. The Saints won their first regu lar season conference champi onship in 25 years by finishing the regular season 12-2 in confer ence play and 26-5 overall. This record had Carroll ranked No. 23 in the NAIA power poll before the team’s final game at the Frontier Conference tournament. At the Frontier Conference tournament held in the Butte Civic Center, Carroll was upset by No. 4 ranked Lewis-Clark State in the semifinal round. Just as the first two meetings between these teams were extremely close, so was the semifinal game at the tournament. Carroll won the first two games against Lewis-Clark State 72-69 and 78-68, respectively. The third meeting would have Lewis-Clark State defeating Carroll 72-71. Not winning the Frontier Conference tournament wouldn’t be enough to keep the Saints out of the national tournament, how ever, as they received an at-large bid to enter the national tourna ment for the first time in Carroll College women’s basketball histo ry. The national tournament was held in Jackson, Tenn., and con sisted of 32 of the nation’s top basketball teams with four eight- team brackets. The Saints drew the 7 seed of their bracket and played 2 seed Brescia University (27-5), located in Kentucky. Carroll’s first appearance was an unsuccessful one as they lost in this first round game to Brescia 56-64. Carroll stuck with Brescia through the first half until the end, when Brescia gained a four-point advantage before the half. Brescia expanded on this lead in the sec ond half to win by 8 points. According to Melissa Linder, news reporter for The Jackson, a Tennessee newspaper, Carroll coach Shawn Nelson said, “We had the chance to win but didn’t box out,” referring to the extra shot opportunities that Brescia was given by the offensive rebounds Carroll gave up to them. The first half had Carroll see ing many second and third oppor tunities whereas the second half was not as forgiving. This was unfortunate as Carroll shot only 30 percent from the field for the game while Brescia shot 42 per cent. According to Linder, Nelson commented on the loss by saying, “This is a learning experience for our program. We missed out on a big opportunity.” This had Carroll ending the season 28-7. It also, however, had Carroll gaining respect from Brescia coach, Marty Rowe, who asked Nelson after the game if he could find a date for the two teams to play each other next sea son.
