Baker works in the International Programs Department of Carroll College. by Stefanie Evans Staff Writer Carroll College has added a new gender studies class this semester, entitled Perspectives on Gender. The point of the class is to help students develop an understanding of the role that gender plays in shaping the world. Students will also “gain a basic understanding of the role the concept of gender plays in a variety of academic dis ciplines,” said Kay Satre from the department of languages and liter ature. “I think it is important for us,” said Keila Davis, a senior commu nication and public relations major from Helena, Mont, who is cur rently enrolled in the class, “as students to understand how gender plays out in so many areas of our lives, especially coming from a liberal arts background.” Arrive Alive Reminder A LITTLE INTOXICATED? The class includes curriculum from communications, sociology, psychology, literature, biology, international relations, history, ethics and the media. Each week the class will be directed by a pro fessor from the featured field of study who will inform students on the presence of gender issues in their field through readings, lec tures, videos, and projects. “Do these stereotypes help or hurt a man’s interaction with other men and with women in society?” is one of the questions that Rick Moritz, from the department of communications, will be asking when he leads the class in examin ing the concept of multiple mas culinities. According to Moritz, students will examine how we develop stereotypes, and what pos itive and negative effects are gen erated. Literary fun at Miller’s Crossing by Kate Wilson Intern Writer Carroll’s literary underworld has been pretty quiet lately. But it doesn’t have to be! Join in on some excitement on Thursday, February 17, as Naked Words will be hosting a special “Carroll Night!” Naked Words is a weekly litera ture reading that happens every Thursday night, 8:00 p.m., at Miller’s Crossing, 52 South Park Avenue.
