Students attend FOCUS National Conference by Ann Goldes Staff Writer Carroll’s Fellowship of Catholic University Student (FOCUS) trav eled to Denver to attend the FOCUS 2005 National Student Leadership Conference. The con ference was held Friday Jan. 14, through Sunday, Jan. 16. Carroll sent 50 students to the conference. On the national website, www.focusonline.org, this event was advertised as, “featuring nationally known speakers, hun dreds of other college students, dozens of breakout sessions on hot topics, and, most importantly, time to think about the big questions in life.” Matthew Kelly, a nationally by Amy Lind Staff Writer This year will be a year of change for the Student Ambassadors in many different aspects. Ten seniors who are involved in the Ambassadors will be graduat ing in May of this year, leaving room for new students to take their place. These seniors will be replaced with students applying and interviewing for positions at the end of January. Along with the graduating seniors, Laurie Rodriguez, having new and differ ent responsibilities within the known author and speaker who spoke at the conference, wrote both Rediscovering Catholicism and The Rhythm of Life. The theme for the conference was “Once for all.” Some questions for the students that came out of Kelly’s talk were, “Why are we here?” “What are we made for?” and “How can I make a difference on my campus?” There were more than 1700 stu dents in attendance, the biggest conference yet. “The conference is always so inspirational because it puts you in contact with Catholic students from all over who are becoming more and more excited about their faith,” said Maria Fullerton, a con ference attendee. admission office, will be passing on the duties of Ambassador advi sor to Nicole Berg, a 2003 Carroll graduate, who now works in the admission office. The Ambassadors of Carroll College is an organization based out of the admission office that helps to promote Carroll to prospective students and their fam ilies. Giving tours, working pro gram days, and helping with orien tation are just a few of the respon sibilities of the Ambassadors. “I am really looking forward to becoming involved again in a pro gram I loved so much going to The conference also shows how wrong the idea is that the church is growing old. There were many young orders of priests and nuns there, not to mention the atten- dance by the students. Now that focus is on 25 campuses across the United States, it is no surprise that so many young people are getting involved with their faith. Along with Berg, Kate Phipps will be taking over as Ambassador coordinator for 2005. Phipps will be the acting as the student liaison between the Admission staff and the Ambassadors. As a team Berg and Phipps will continue the tradi tion of retreats, tours, and pro grams for perspective students. Pro-life group forms by Maria Fullerton Staff Writer Saints for Life, the new pro-life organization on campus, had its first meeting on Monday, January 31st. Twenty-seven students were in attendance. “So far, there has been over whelming enthusiasm and support from many people both at Carroll and the larger Helena communi ty,” said Vice President James “For this reason, mem bers of this pro-life organiza tion do not support abor tion, capital punishment, euthanasia, or anything that is contrary to the culture of life.” Stupfel, a junior biology student. “I’m so excited,” Holly Holzknecht, from the ASCC pro gramming board, said, “We really need something like this here at Carroll.” Already, events are planned for this spring. The main focus of these events is education, prayer, and service. The organization’s mission is simple: do what they can, where they are to uphold the sanctity of human life. Upholding the sanctity of human life involves a commit ment to the human person at all stages of life, from conception until natural death. For this rea son, members of this pro-life organization do not support abor tion, capital punishment, euthana sia, or anything that is contrary to the culture of life. All Carroll pro-lifers are encouraged to attend meetings. The group gathers Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Hoff/Kavanaugh Room of the Cube. The leaders of Saints for Life, Maria Fullerton, James Stupfel and Nicole Greff hope to become an official ASCC Club by the end of February.
