C a m o z z i on C in e m a The Decemberists: Picaresque by Chris Matrix Intern Writer All hail The Decemberists for having the good sense to make a worthy follow-up to 2003’s Her Majesty The Decemberists. The band’s latest offering, Picaresque, is a slab of indie rock gold. The Decemberists has definitely done some growing up in the last two years, and Picaresque is proof of the band’s potential. The album kicks off with a bang with the epic sounding “The Infanta” and from that point on the album refuses to let you go. Front man and overall brain behind the band, Colin Meloy has never sounded better. And rest of the band is equally enchanting. This album has every thing that a Decemberists fan could possibly want on an album and more. From up beat sing alongs, to mellow acoustic ballads Picaresque is truly The Decemberists most well rounded and best sounding release to date. I would encourage any fan of folk, indie, or even just music in general to go out and get this record. Easily the best album of 2005 thus far. Also for those of you C h r ls M a ttlx: Carroll ’s own music critic and discjockey is ready to fire reviews of cds out there for you to check out before you buy. Decemberists fans out there they will be playing in Helena on April 12th at Helena Middle School. Rainer Maria - anyone in love with you (already knows) Let me just start this review by' saying “I absolutely LOVE Rainer Maria” so I was ecstatic when I heard that they were going to be releasing a CD/DVD combo. If you have no idea who Rainer Maria is then I’ll be happy to tell you that they are only one of the best indie rock bands in the scene today. Their last full-length album Long Knives Drawn was simply amazing, and this live concert CD is proof that the band can hold their own in a live setting. The DVD itself is worth the $15 dollars, but you also get an entire CD of live recordings as an added bonus. The DVD isn’t the world’s most exciting concert experience, but it’s a great way for fans such as myself to see the band in action. The recording quality on the CD is phenomenal and the band sounds just as good as they do on a studio album, which says a lot about the level of talent pres ent in Rainer Maria. I absolutely love this package, and anyone who is already a fan of the band should go out and get this release right away. If you have never heard Rainer Maria before this live CD/DVD combo pack is a great way to get acquainted with the band, because it also serves as a comprehensive retrospec tive of all of the band’s work to date by including songs from every album. If you call yourself a music fan, and you don’t know who Rainer Maria is then you’d better reevalu ate your position. Do yourself a favor and go get this release. It’s well worth it for the little money you’ll have to spend. Rainer Maria 1 0 / 1 0 The O.C. Complete First Season DVDs by Joey Camozzi Intern Writer What it’s about: After sixteen- year-old Ryan is arrested for steal ing a car, public defender Sandy Cohen invites the kid from the wrong side of the tracks to live with him and his family in his affluent Newport Beach home. Upon arriving he learns that the rich have bigger problems than he could ever imagine. DVD Features: Commentary, deleted scenes, on screen music guide, and documentaries. Review: I love television. My love of television is obvious to readers of my reviews; I try and review at least one TV box set per month. My love of certain shows has rubbed off on roommates and friends. Alias, Nip/Tuck, 24, Deadwood, and Arrested Development have been recent hits in Trinity Hall, yet it’s been diffi cult to get people to watch certain shows. The O.C. is one of these shows. By watching advertise ments it’s no secret why one would be put off, it looks like Beverly Hills 90210. After watching a few episodes I found The O.C. to be 90210 for people who hate 90210. The producers know what your thinking and never take themselves too seriously, yet they take the characters seriously, and even giv ing the parents just as much screen “T h e DVD K in g :” Joey Camozzi, is always willing to let us know what he thinks. If you have any DVDs you’d like him to review please drop us an e-mail at prospector@carroll.edu. time as their skinnier counterparts. The show avoids the clichés of the genre by keeping their pulse on the generation, specifically nerds with the character of Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) the comic book reading, Death Cab for Cutie listening comic relief. If you’re a fan of entertaining shows with well- developed characters, comedy, drama, and great music then stop being a snob and buy The O.C. Joey-O -M e ter 8 . 9/10 The Works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry What it’s about: Look into careers of three of the most prolif ic directors working today with music videos, com mercials, and docu mentaries from Spike Jonze, Chris Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quite” and The Beastie Boys “Sabotage” you can see where he developed his .......... quirky sensibilities. Joey-O -M e ter Michel Gondry seemed 8 . 5/10 to have a long working ............. relationship with Bjork Cunningham, and Michel Gondry. DVD Features: Commentaries, bonus disk, short films, Commercials, documentaries, and more. Review: Fans of recent films like Spike Jones’ Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind can see where these directors developed their style and craft. Watching Spike Jones’ directed videos like having directed several of her videos and also worked with the Rolling Stones and Kylie Minogue. The material ranges from comedic to absolutely creepy (most of that can be found on the Chris Cunningham set). But above all else this set has some awesome music with videos from the Breeders, Aphex Twin, Portishead, and more. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2005 VOLUME 88, NO. 6 photo by Katie Stiel
