Fr. McCallum new director of campus ministry by Mike Stratman Intern Writer Have you heard of the new cam pus ministry director? Many stu dents have said that he is great. Others have said that the masses he does are moving. Most will recognize him from last year. This new campus ministry director is none other than Rev. Dougald McCallum. “It’s a great honor and a privi lege to be here,” said McCallum. It is the work of God that he was chosen and the Lord wanted to use his talents, he explained. “The director position opened up when the former director, Rev. Turner, decided to return to his diocese to work in his parish min istry.” The bishop then asked him if he would be the campus min istry director. Being the director, he oversees the campus ministry of not only students, but faculty as well. “The overall core responsibility of being the director is helping students and faculty cultivate a strong spirituali ty to live according to God’s reve lation and be the best we can,” McCallum said. “On a more basic level it involves developing good leaders for the future,” he added. He must also see that the sacraments of Baptism, Rite of Christian Initiation for adults (RCIA), and confirmation are being offered to our community. McCallum is also the director of the pre-seminary program of six men who are con sidering the priesthood. He helps these young men recognize what they are called to do. In the future, he would like to see a pro gram for the formation of young women. “I want to give good direction,” said McCallum. As the director he understands what an honor it is to be asked, and will never underestimate it. McCallum is also the director of Legendary Lodge which is a Catholic camp for an array of kids in grades 5-12. “The camp is a chance for these kids to share their faith and have a good time with others. It is an opportunity for them to meet oth ers who have the same faith,” he added. Many of the kids who attend the camp become leaders at the lodge. Father Dougald McCallum is the new director of campus ministry. “I really enjoy the students and care a lot about them,” he said. He could not stress enough that it is a privilege to be the one chosen for the position. New professor of theology at Carroll by Scout Murphy Staff Writer Dr. James Cross is the most recent addition to the faculty of Carroll College. Dr. Cross is an Assistant Professor of Theology who comes to us with much edu cation, experience, and enthusi asm. Dr. Cross began his educational journey with a major in Psychology and minor in Philosophy from Seton Hall University, also a Catholic dioce san college. He pursued his mas ter’s degree from Seton as well, in addition to studying Pastoral Ministry, and training for the priesthood for three years. It was after his third year that Dr. Cross recognized that his vocational call ing was not to ordained ministry, but in an academic and educational field instead. After he received his mas ter’s degree in Pastoral Ministry, he went on to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and received his doctor ate in Systematic Theology. Dr. James Cross is the new Carroll appealed theology professor at Carroll, to Dr. Cross for many reasons. First, Dr. Cross feels most comfortable and compe tent at a Catholic school where Christian principles and norms are encouraged and valued. Also, “the people here are very nice and Montana is just beauti ful,” says Dr. Cross. Not only is this the right place for Dr. Cross to teach, his fam ily is enjoying Helena as well. He has a wife,Jackie, a five-year-old son John Paul and a three- year-old daughter named Jamie. He recognizes that Helena is a great town, and a great place to raise his children. His wife, Jackie,is a high school English teacher. Dr. Cross is currently teaching Moral Theology and Theological Foundations. He requires his Moral Theology students to write a report on a saint or a saintly per son as appropriate to our school mascot. When asked who his favorite saint was, Dr. Cross quick ly replied “John Paul II.” “Even though he is not canon ized, he is definitely my pope.” he explained. Dr. Cross adores John Paul II for three distinct reasons: His emphasis on culture as the foundational sphere of society ( as opposed to politics or economics) his leadership in the defense of all humanity, and because he allowed his specific life experiences to shape his teachings. “While the more Dr. Cross on page 15 \ On-campus Mass Schedule W eekday M asses Time Location Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 8:15 a.m. St. Charles Chapel Mon. - Fri. 11:10 a.m. St. Charles Chapel Mon. - Fri. noon Borromeo Chapel Wed. 9:15 p.m. St. Charles Chapel W eekend M asses Sun. 6 p.m. Guadalupe Pastoral Center 9 p.m. St. Charles Chapel Sacram ent of Penance Wed. 7:30 - 8 a.m. St. Charles Chapel Sun. 5 - 5:30 p.m. Guadalupe Pastoral Center 9 - 9:30 p.m. St. Charles Chapel V ------ / ''Campus Ministry' Notes Keep on Searching!
