■ + The Prospector www.carroll.edu From the editor... The end is finally in sight! The semester is winding down (and picking up for others) as finals week is fast approaching. Where has the time gone? My deepest apologies to John Gleaves and others who laughed their way through the last edition of the Prospector. As simple as it may seem to throw together a newspaper, those assuming that is the case are mistaken. The Prospector is a collaborative effort by many students that put in a great deal of time and effort to bring you news. I’d like to respond to this month’s letter to the editor and point out that the first edition of this semester’s Prospector had several stories on the debate of ‘dis-invitation’ of Planned Parenthood from the “Science on the Edges of Humanity” symposium. We try our hardest to keep students updated on campus happenings. I strongly encourage those who feel they could do a better job reporting news to get ahold of us and take a stab at it themselves. Much is going on around our little campus these days. We have new ASCC representatives ready to make a difference, students showing off their theatrical, and dance talents, the Charlies Film Festival fast approaching, and (my apologies for mentioning our nationally acclaimed football team, John), our Fighting Saints football team is working towards a record fourth straight NAIA National Championship. Best of luck to the team and all of you with finals! Have a safe trip home (or where ever) and happy holidays! Letters to the editor are always welcome! Spoofing student news Dear Editors, A strange phenomenon recently has been sweeping through col lege newspapers. We should have seen it coming. With the success of fake news like The Daily Show, The Onion, and now The Colbert Report, it was inevitable. It seems that college newspapers across the country have begun spoofing stu dent news. At least on this trend, Carroll is taking the lead. It would have been easy for The Prospector to switch to fake news during a slow news month. Yet they did it the hard way. Since the last issue, events have landed Carroll on the front page of the Independent Record and on Montana Public Radio. Yet such events, like the President's un-inviting of a speak er from Planned Parenthood or the College not allowing the Montana Human Rights Network to attend the Judy Shepard lecture were ignored in favor of the fake news format. College students who read the latest edition of The Prospector were in for a laugh. Perhaps some who were expecting real news were slightly confused. One stu dent, who clearly missed the joke, wondered why a random picture of a football player was on the front page. Other students^ possi bly the juniors and seniors, who have seen a pattern emerging, cer tainly appreciated the humor. Personally, I found the \Ethics on the Hill\ discussion about Facebook to be the most comical. With debates about academic free dom and censorship raging on our college campus, we choose to debate a website. I laughed espe cially hard at Dr. Smillie's point that he thought it \fair to use the information on Facebook for pur poses that might harm students.\ Imagine a professor wanting to harm students. In the next \Ethics on the Hill,\ we could debate bringing corporeal punishment back into Catholic schools. I mean, we are only joking, right? It is no wonder that college newspapers are switching to satire. College is serious enough without having a serious newspa per floating around. There is so much potential for fake news. Imagine The Prospector with run ning gags appearing in each issue. We could have fake debates about allowing squirrels on campus or games like \find the typos.\ Nobody would have to check facts or research stories. The whole newspaper could be one big spoof. I mean, if we are not going to do real news anyway, why not go the whole nine yards?
