10 ■ t T he P rospector WWW.CARROLL.EDU bv mall thomas staff writer Every morning the Helena Independent Record delivers hundreds of newspapers to Carroll students, staff, and facul ty. The newspapers provide dif ferent uses for different people. But the most prominent use of the newspaper around Carroll College is for the games. From the crossword puzzle to the Su Do Ku, the crypto quip to the word jumble, newspaper puz zle games are the craze around the Carroll campus. For instance, if you were to walk into the cube or the scola on an average weekday, you could see anywhere from five to 20 people playing these games at any given time. In fact, the other day I sat in the cube for a couple o f hours and counted 16 different people playing the assortment of diverse puzzle games. The question looming in my mind is, \Why are these games so popular?\ \I like the games because they're a way to get my mind moving in the morning,\ said Nick Colasurdo, a senior, sports management major from Portland. \The games are fun and they act as a means for a mental workout.\ But is this the only reason why people enjoy playing these games on a daily basis? Hardly. . Many people enjoy the puzzles for their own reasons. \I enjoy playing the puzzles in the newspaper because they are a great way to pass the time before and after classes,\ said Josh Schmidt, a senior, business major from Spokane. \The puzzles sure beat watching T.V.\ \I am fond o f the games because they create a means to be social with others around you,\ said Laurel Cifala, a junior, communications/public relations major from Big Timber, Mont. \I also think that the puzzles are very tedious, so they encourage a mental thought process that ensures hard work in the class room.\ So these puzzles games are a major success around the campus in terms of students. I am also a big supporter of the puzzles within the newspa per. I think that they offer stu dents, staff, faculty, and others an opportunity to put some excitement into their lives. \The games allow people to escape from their everyday lives,\ said Cifala. \I think they [the puzzles] are a way to let people focus on something that isn't per tinent to their daily activities.\ No matter what the reason is for the people who like the puz zles, one thing is for sure. Newspaper puzzle games are the craze around Carroll College. So try a few o f them out today. ■»É pi ■ - - M atti X -HVI usi C THE YEAR IN MUSIC by chris matlix staff writer So here it is ladies and gentlemen, my picks for the top albums of 2005. This CD will bring you back to the days o f Legos, story time, playing with Tonka Trucks and watching Saturday morning cartoons (no offense to those of you who still excercise those rights). I haven’t seen the movie, but went out on the line and purchased the sound track to the film Curious George, with all o f Jack’s friends (G-Love, Ben Harper, etc.). Turned out to be a great purchase. Upside Down is a wonderfully crafted “ kid-like” tune that cheers me up everytime I play it - the other tracks follow suit. I picked this CD up on iTunes and scored a coloring Book with it, as if you needed to more incentive for a great CD with lots o f zing. . '• • _ \ * ’ . y ' • , .
