M a ta y a said t h a t in order to ensure the safety of their products Sodexho follows a system called H a z a rd Analysis Critical Control Point. The HACCP system serves as a guide for the Sodexho s taff because it abides by all codes a n d regidations t h a t the H e a lth D e p a r tm e n t requires. Along w ith following th e HACCP system M a taya said t h a t Sodexho has a com p a n y called the N a tional Safety Federation come in and grade th e ir overall food safety and q u a lity on a 100 point sys tem . \N o thing less t h a n 92.5 percent is allowed for Sodexho,\ said M a ta y a . A ccording to M a taya the Sodexho s taff is required to atten d a m eeting once a m o n th t h a t focuses on safety updates in order to m ake their environm e n t the best for b o th the students and the staff. W ith the accom p lishm e n ts of Sodexho's im p rovem e n ts tow a rd safety and quality students should learn to appreciate and th in k twice n e x t tim e th e y feel the need to com p lain. The D e p a r tm e n t of E n v ironm e n tal Q u a lity specifically, has m ade it a goal to support the program at Carroll a n d has provided internship opportunities as well as jobs post graduation for ES s tudents. The program needs a faculty chair m e m b e r a n d adjustm e n ts to the curriculum to offer m o re specific classes to students. There are m a n y faculty m em b e rs t h a t would be highly interested in providing classes in the field of environm e n tal studies if m o n ey could be budgeted. I t is clear t h a t faculty, s tudent, and com m u n ity s u p p o rt exists for the program and suggested changes. There ju s t needs to be someone who will take th e s tep in f a ith to assist the program to new heights. JUST CAUSE continued from page 7 W h ile th e focus of SJ S will b e placed on local concerns and dom estic issues, the group will also be hosting a num b e r of films on in tern a tional problem s. In encouraging s tudents to get involved and m ake a difference the group will use a positive tactics. Instead of m a k ing s tudents feel guilty for the food th e y w a ste SJS feels it would be m o re effective to help them realize how m u ch th e y w a sted and show them t h a t they can change their habits. In s tead of feeling awful, Carroll s tudents will m ake a conscious effort to change and feel good about their con trib u tio n to positive im p a c t. PARKING continued from page 7 H a rdw ick said the College did consider c e rtain concerns of stu dents and employees w h e n designing the new system , to include a fee structure \based on perim e ter and proxim ity, so people who w a n t to pay to park closer c a n do so\. H a rdw ick also said th e y considered students' requests to lim it the num b e r of perm its sold in certain lots, and to open up some space on cam p u s for visitors to park, \w ithout taking so m u ch parking off-line so the students and faculty can still use the parking.\ H a rdw ick said t h a t since the new parking system has been p u t into operation, Carroll has observed other problem s t h a t dem a n d change. H a rdw ick also said t h a t in the future the college m ay be presented w ith even m o re difficulties. One problem t h a t m a y present itself in five to ten years is the possibility of B e n ton Avenue becom ing a four-lane s treet, th u s ending all parking on t h a t s treet. B u t, \There's a desire to keep enough green space on the cam p u s at this point, so we're not looking at expanding any parking lots to accom m o d a te m o re people,\ said H a rdw ick. The college is planning on sending out e-m ails this spring in the hopes of receiving suggestions and issues from students t h a t m ay im prove the parking s ituation in the future. As H a rdw ick said, it is not a perfect system , and I s trongly urge those w ith concerns or pro posals to keep an eye out for this e-m ail, and voice your opinion on the m a tter. BISHOP continued from page 12 their questions. H e encourages s tudents and other m em b e rs of the Church to \keep our collective eyes fixed on hope\ while educating ourselves on the teachings of the Catholic Church and dealing w ith present day m o ral issues. T h roughout the course of the evening, Bishop Thom a s called on several of the Carroll theology faculty present to add their thoughts to topics discussed. H e also asked for the opinion of B rother Steven H a le, who was visiting from Joliet, 1 1 1 . a n d is a highschool c la ssm a te of the Bishop's.
