EDU T h e P r o s p e c t o r 11 PROGRAM MAKING APPLICATION PROCESS FASTER AND EASIER by megan koppes intern writer PEACEFUL HEALTH IN-MIND by emily marie intern writer Ready or not, graduation is rapidly approaching and Carroll sen iors are getting ready for the next phase of their lives. One senior, Danielle Daehnke is definitely ready. The 21-year-old senior from Saint Helens, Oregon has been work ing hard for the past four years to earn a multi-disciplinary major in biology and psychology. Daehnke plans on working as a physician's assistant. However, Daehnke will first spend two and a half years working in Mali, West Africa in the Peace Corps. \I'm looking forward to being immersed in another culture and learning about another culture completely different than our own,\ said Daehnke when asked what she hopes to gain from the experi ence. While in Mali, Daehnke's focus will be helping pregnant mothers and new mothers with maternal health and child health care. She hopes to have the opportunity to work in community health care. Daehnke has always had a strong interest in the Peace Corps but her micro-biology professor, John Addis provided further encourage ment. During her years at Carroll, Daehnke enjoyed her studies in biolo gy the most. She was strongly influenced by the members o f her the sis committee, Sam Alvey, John Addis and Murphy Fox. According to Daehnke, she will mostly miss seeing her friends all the time and the faculty in the biology department when she gradu ates. Applications to Carroll College are up 200 from previous years, according to Cynthia Thornquist, director o f admission at Carroll. This increase in applications is due largely to a new program the college is offering to high school students called Fast App. Through Carroll's contract with Royall and Company, a pre-popu- lated list o f high school seniors are given the opportunity to be prior ity candidates when applying to Carroll. Royall and Company searches a list o f high school seniors and designates students to be invited to participate in applying to Carroll through the Fast App. The students chosen fill out and submit the Carroll application, then once the other pieces o f the application arrive, such as SAT or ACT scores and recommendations, an admission decision is made within 10 days. The program allows the school the become more interactive. \In this day and age, students don't like waiting,\ said Thornquist. The program may also increase enrollment numbers. \If students apply, there is a greater likelihood that they will enroll because o f the relationships formed during and after that process,\ said Thornsquist. Overall, Thornquist said that the admission staff is excited to work with more students. Most notice ably are linebacker Seamus Molloy, and Kyle Cicero, offen sive lineman. \Seamus is an intelligent play er who understands the game, and uses that knowledge to his advantage,\ said senior tight- end Kendal Selle. This should be an interesting year for the Carroll Saints, but it should be a great one. \This is my last year playing football, so I'm just planning on enjoying all aspects o f it. But I'm also really going to focus on hanging out and having one more season o f fun with my brothers,\ comments Schmidt. \We lost a bunch o f seniors this year, but we have a bunch of seniors coming back next year. It should be a fun year,\ said Molloy.
