T h e P rospector WWW.CARROLL.EDU From the editor’s desk LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fellow Students, My name is Emily Mannex and I am proud to serve as the new co editor o f The Prospector, along with Jodi Schmitz. Jodi is a sopho more majoring in English and I am a junior majoring in Communications and Public Relations. Our mission as editors is to reach out to all the various communi ties that make up Carroll College. The Prospector is first and foremost your school newspaper, and we will do everything possible to capture stories, report on issues, and provide entertainment pertinent to the student body. This publication will reflect the community it serves. Jodi, the staff writers and I will need your help in gathering news and features that reflect the Carroll experience. Please, don't hesitate to email your story ideas to prospector@carroll.edu. We all owe Laurel Cifala, editor for the past year, a warm thank- you for the dedication and many hours of volunteer time needed to produce The Prospector. Her talents as an editor and writer serve as an inspiration and the new team will strive to carry on with journal ism serving the needs of our Carroll College community. I would like to give a personal thank-you to Brent Koning for his time, patience, and impeccable layout skills. & vajl \ U\ M f l i / u v e x Editor in Chief T h e P r o s p e c t o r A STUDENT PUBLICATION OF C arroll C ollege Editor in Chief Intern Writers Emily Mannex Aamer Ghaffar Maggie McCall Assistant Editor’s Kurt Paulson Brent Koning Megan Koppes Jodi Schmitz Sam LeRoque Matt Thomas Robert Padmos Chris Mattix Chris Torrens Malena Cater Advertising Director Katie Satre Bobby Lewis , Mariah Cantwell-Frank Carrie Ritter Faculty Adviser Ashley Duvall Prof. Brent Northup Emily Marie Melissa Turnbull Layout and Graphic Design Catie Priddy Megan Gergen Katie Smith Elizabeth Larson Ashley Stevick Peter Breuer Staff Writers Monica Tripp Chris Mattix Ben Fuglevand Photography Melody Breidenbach Molly Gardiner All students of all majors and years can join the Prospector Staff. Letters must be signed and must include the address and telephone number of the writer. Letters are subject to editing for brevity. Unlike many o f those whom write letters to the editor, I have an inside perspective on this edi tion of the Prospector. I knew that some of these articles would be bold and courageous, and others would recognize people who have enriched our college experiences. And I figured that I'd write this letter, not so much to the editor, but to my peers, the upcoming graduates and stu dents who are continuing their education at Carroll. Buddha said, \The secret of health for both mind and body is to not mourn about the past, worry about the future, or antic ipate troubles, but to live in the present moment, wisely and earnestly.\ Take each day for the beauty or hideousness that it presents and breathe with it. Embrace each moment as a learning expe rience - let things marinate. We are in college only once. Take class material and plaster it all over you life. Speak up. Use your voice. Talk about STDs on campus, because it's a truth. Thank those professors that have forced you to look at the world, because it's not as just as we might think it to be. Know that there will come a time when we have to say good bye, or we may have to take the initiative and cut off our own umbilical cords. Dance like no one is watching, especially if it is to a band that you sincerely love. Become a band-aid! Go where you've never gone before. It could be on a Headlights trip, study-abroad or belly-dancing lessons. Volunteer. There's nothing like sharing your summer with a cabin of 8th-grade girls. Very similar to sharing your summer with a cabin of 4th-grade boys. When it comes to college, is it the classes, or the amazing shoes that we wear to class? And galoshes are not out o f style by no means - wear your rubbers. Laugh at your mistakes, but learn from them too. Take responsibility for the path you choose, but you can always switch the map you're reading from. And if you get a flat, call up Brent Northup. But most o f all, remember the love o f the Carroll community. There are too many to name, too many that come to mind when I think of those who have taught me to love. Always, always, love one another. Our stories in the Prospector are about the ones we love, and the ways that we show our love for whoever is a part of our community. Peace. ~ Elizabeth Larson, senior Sociology student P.S. I would like to congratu late Emily, our editor, for doing such a great job with her first Prospector and I wish her the best for next year.
