Character. “We’ve lost these types of games in the past,” Nelson said, re ferring to the fact that his team fell behind Warner Pacific late in the contest after leading for most of the game. “But we kept our com posure tonight, and cameback and controlled the ball inside to score.” The event was the final women’s game of the 19th Annual Kiwanis Classic Shootout at the Carroll P.E. Center. The opponent was a good one, Warner Pacific of Portland, Ore., who qualified for the national tournament last year. The undefeated Saints, 6-0, pre vailed 70-64 in the end, but only after overcoming the adversity mentioned by Nelson. In a very physical, defen sive contest, the home team never trailed until there was two and a half minutes remaining. The Car- roll ladies held a 37-33 advantage at halftime, spearheaded by the hot hand of Amy Brooks, who canned nine points in the opening stanza. Warner Pacific’s Jessica Mendezo- na countered with a trio of 3-point ers. Carroll came out in the second half and opened up an eight-point lead, 49-41. But the Lady Knights would not go away. Led by Nicole Brown and Danika Wilson, Warner Pacific fought back to take the lead, 62-60, with 2:20 on the clock. A pair of free throws each by Sophie Fomey and Brooks helped forge Carroll back on top, 64-62. And then a couple of inside lay-ups by Fomey, the second on a picture-perfect assist by Michela Schmitz, put the game on ice. “I thought we played decent defense, even though we stmggled on offense,” Nelson said. Carroll had a lot of balls loop in and back out, shooting only 41 -percent from the field (24-for- 58). “I’m real proud of the way they didn’t give up when we lost the lead, and made the big plays in the end when we had to.” Brooks and Fomey shared the team’s scoring honors, with 14 points apiece, followed by Jolene Fuzesy, with 11. Brooks was tops with eight rebounds, while Caitlin Courchaine dealt four assists. Selected as 2006 Kiwanis Classis all-stars were Nicole Brown, Amy Brooks, Jolene Fu- sezy, Te Awhina Airanui, of Cas cade, and Montana Tech’s Rebecca Gimeno and Janessa Todd. Gimeno was also named tourney MVP.
