What is this?
Optical character recognition (OCR) is an automated process that converts a digital image containing numbers and letters into computer-readable numbers and letters. The search engine used on this web site searches OCR-generated text for the word or phrase you are looking for. Please note that OCR is not 100 percent accurate. If the original image is blurry, has extraneous marks, or contains ornate font styles or very small text, the OCR process will produce nonsense characters, extraneous spaces, and other errors, such as those you may see on this page. In addition, the OCR process cannot interpret images and may ignore them or render them as strings of nonsense characters. Despite these drawbacks, OCR remains a powerful tool for making newspaper pages accessible by searching.

Eagle Mount offers new dance class By EVIE EICH Prospector S taff Writer As the Americorps Team Leader at Carroll College, Heather Hass of Cassopolis, Mich., is well aware of the positive effects of volunteering. There is no exception in her new endeavor. Hass has been in collaboration with Sherrie Petty of Eagle Mount Helena to form a dance class for those with disabilities. According to their newsletter, Eagle Mount Helena is “commit ted to providing therapeutic recre ational opportunities to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities and to support them and their families”. Hass is equipped with previous dance and teaching experience. She believes “people with disabili ties should have the same opportu nities ... especially when it comes to recreation. They have a lot of energy and love to move and they really appreciate the experience.” One participant in the event, Amy, has been involved in a num ber of other opportunities offered by Eagle Mount Helena, includ ing horseback riding. When asked about the experience, she said, “I would rather be dancing than any thing else.” The class offers a social setting for the participants as well as their parents. Hass commented, “Fami lies and parents can talk and enjoy seeing their child move and have fun.” The dance class is an eight week session. Taking place in the Carroll College dance studio on Thursday nights from 6:30 - 7:30 pm each week. For further information about the class and other Eagle Mount Helena events call Sherrie Petty at 461 - 9483. Carroll pep band nets By KOBY MAY Prospector S taff Writer The Carroll College Pep Band completed its very first fundraising project last semes ter. By selling raffle tickets, seeking donations, and estab lishing corporate sponsorships, the band raised $2,497. Megan Kerzman, a 2004 Carroll grad and previous band member, is the new band director this year. Kerzman has incorporated fundraising activities for a travel expense fund into the course curricu lum. The band members raised money to transport themselves and their instruments to away games. They didn’t travel last semester but intend to in the future. Along with the fund-raising, the band has started to perform at more events than in the past. Some include: playing at a tailgate, making posters, and wearing shirts featuring spon sor names. “We just started playing at volleyball games for the first time last semester,” said nearly $2,500 in fundraiser Kerzman. “The band is more involved this year than when I was a member in 2000.” The pep band currently has 18 members, including new and returning students. Many of the members re ceive a $1,000 scholarship for coming to rehearsal and per forming at football and basket ball games. “Being in pep band is a big commitment that takes time and energy,” said Gayle Rich ardson, senior trumpet player. “It is also a good way to meet people and get involved.” // Being in pep band is a big commitment that takes time and energy. —Gayle Richardson, senior trumpet player // Thursday, February 1,2007 Volume 90 No. 4
