Page 15 English professor gives good advice about writing By DREW RILEY Prospector S t a f f W riter Any student that has been to Loren Graham’s office has seen the collage on his door. Rejection letters from poetry publications are plastered in front of Graham’s Simperman office. Graham knows from experience that poetry does not pay well. “I’ve been rejected by every magazine in the country,” Graham said. Carroll’s resident poet is also an associate professor in the English department. Graham has been published in various magazines and journals, and his recent publication in the prestigious Tar River Poetry put him in the spotlight again. Two of his poems, “Skinning,” and “Fate,” were printed in the latest edition of the semi-annual all-poetry magazine. “Skinning,” written about skin ning squirrels with his grandfather, was written 20 years ago, while “Fate” was written in the past three months, said Graham. The inclu sion of a twenty-year old poem that seemed impossible to publish surprised Graham, who submitted it as a “throwaway” poem. “There’s no accounting for the tastes of editors,” Graham said. Graham began writing when he was very young. He wrote his first poem at just six-years old. When Graham was 19, he de cided he wanted to be a poet. “If you really want to be a poet, you have to write everyday,” Graham said, a goal he has accom plished. However, Graham went to school to be a composer before switching to writing. Teaching did not become an interest until Graham started work as a teacher’s assistant at Baylor University, where he studied under William Virgil Davis, a former Yale Series for Younger Poets winner. “I had [my students] eating out of / / I've been rejected by every magazine in the country —Loren Graham, English professor / / my hand” Graham said of his first day teaching at Baylor. Graham took a position in the English department at Carroll in 2001 . Graham teaches Introduction to Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing, among other classes, at Carroll. “I send him some poetry outside of class, and he gives me great feedback,” said Chris Mattix, ju nior communications major with an English writing minor. Graham estimates that he has had 70 to 100 poems published in his career, along with one book, Mose, published by Wesleyan University Press in Connecticut. His other book, The Ring Scar, is finished and is being considered by other publishers, Graham said. Graham also assists with Colors, Carroll’s own literary magazine. “I feel like I have an advantage because I’m taught by a real poet,” said Adam Zollo, junior English writing major. “He can be long-winded, but he’s got plenty of great things to say, and he’s a funny guy,” added Zollo. The future looks bright for Gra ham. He is getting married to his girl friend of 10 years, Jane, on May 4th.
