_________________________________________________________________ Pane 9 L a d y S a i n t s s t a r t s t r o n g By Katie Smith Intern Writer The women’s basketball team is off to another great start with being 12-0 and having a pre-season rank ing of seventh in the nation. This is the highest pre-season ranking for the women’s team in school history; and they deserve it. Their hard work during the off season and throughout this year’s pre-season has not gone unnoticed. “It is promising to see the stuff we worked on during the summer and pre-season has paid-off,” says senior post Tiffany Rochelle. The team may only be at the start of their year, but with the win column adding up, there are high hopes for the Fighting Saints. The team has gone undefeated, and has won every game by at least 21 points; not many teams can this. “We are very pleased with how the season has gone this year,” says Rochelle. Before the season started, many spectators wondered how the team would do without the backing of Amy Brooks and Sophi Fomey in the middle. Of course, the team has not skipped a beat with this year’s posts taking charge. In comparison to last year, this years posts have recorded better numbers and statistics in offensive rebounds, defensive re bounds, points, and assists. These numbers are part of the reason are they number seven in the nation. We cannot forget about the team’s guards and for wards. Caitlin Courchaine has been leading forces on the court. Fler voice can not only be heard across the court in games, but in prac tice at well. When you walk near the gym during prac tice you can hear her voice echoing in the hallways. Of course Courchaine is not the only leader on her team, Jolene Fuzesy and Danielle Maloney are right there with her. These two women have the work ethic and drive for success that any great team needs. The Saints have a long way ahead of them, but if their first few games are any indication to what is coming, than it should be a great year for the team. Make sure to come out to the Fighting Saint’s women’s basket ball games, I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Men's basketball team By Katie Smith Intern Writer has high expectations S a i n t s s o c c e r d r o p s m a t c h t o d e f e n d i n g c h a m p i o n s The Men’s basketball team has started off strong with a record of 10-3. Though the team is 10-3, they know they can and will become a much stronger team as the season goes on. “We have played a good game, but we haven’t played a great game yet,” said Eder Zuniga. The team has high expectations and they will not be satisfied until they become the team they want to be. A part of becoming the team they want to be will be getting to know one another. With the team ' Having six new players, the team is at a disadvantage in comparison to their competition. “We need time to get to know each other better, and when we do, we should be able to compete for a national championship,” said Zuniga. They need to get to know how each other move and play, before they are able to play as a unit. Once the team has a chance to get to know one another on the court, they will be able to play those great games they have been talking about. Come out to help cheer on your fellow Men’s Saints basketball team. They are a fun team and always give you an entertaining game to watch. By Steve Master Independent Record—11/18/07 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The magic finally ran out for the Car- roll College women’s soccer team Saturday. The offense came up empty. The defense made a costly mis take. And the dreams of an NAIA national championship ended in frustrating fashion. Defending national champion Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) got a fluke first-half goal and hung on for a 2-0 quarterfinal victory at Embry- Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Saints, meanwhile, saw the best season in school history end in large part because of some bad soccer luck. Early on, it appeared the Saints might be outclassed in the first national quarterfinal in school his tory. The Blue Raiders’ quick, flashy forwards dribbled around and through to the Carroll defense for the first 10 minutes, yet failed to capitalize on their opportunities. “I think it was the excitement of (Friday) night’s win and a little bit of being awestruck playing last year’s national champions,” Thor- vilson said. “It took us five or 10 minutes to kind of go, ‘Oh yeah, OK, we can play.’ ” And play they did. “Even after the first goal we still felt we were in the game,” Carroll defender Katie Joseph said. “We had no doubt about it: We played in their half a lot of the game. We just didn’t come out with the win.” “I think we had to make some adjustments at half that worked quite well for us,” Thorvilson said. “Unfortunately we had to push some numbers up into the offense late in the game trying to get the tie and they snuck another goal in on us. But at that point it didn’t matter if we were losing 1 -0 or 4-0. “I thought we put together a great 60 or 70 minutes. We just needed to put together 90 today.” The defeat ended the careers of 10 seniors who will be remem bered for leading the program’s rise to national prominence. This senior class guided the Saints to their first national tournament berth last year, and their first re gional championship and national tournament win this season. “This game had a lot of heart because of the seniors, which makes it a hard loss,” said Joseph, a junior. “But we had a lot of firsts this year, so we’re really proud. We just wish it didn’t have to end here.” “We need to remember it’s been a great season even though we lost, Thorvilson said. “They are now gonna kind of be the bench marks for us.” PHOTO BY PHILTANIS Friday, December 7,2007 Volume 91, No 3
