S p o r t s Saints golf team looks to repeat conference championship The Carroll Saints golf team is off and swinging for the 2012-2013 season after the MSU Billings Yellow Jacket Fall Classic on September 20-21. At this most recent meet, the Carroll men placed third, with a score of 299- 317-611. and the women placed fourth overall, with a score of 357-344-701. At the Montana Tech Invitational Tournament on September 10-11. the Saints men finished in third place, be hind Westminster in second and Lewis- Clark in first, while the women’s team finished fourth. Colin Gunstream. a Division I transfer from Santa Clara Unviersity. led the Carroll men. going 70-77-80 in the tournament, and Jackie Mcc carried the Saints women at 76-79-80. The team is heading into the season with high hopes, after the men v on the Frontier Conference Championship for the first time last year. Coach Bennet MacIntyre has re cruited eight new players, including Gunstream, Zane Clark of Tacoma. Wash., And\ Boyer from Kalispell. and Michael Lavin, also from Kalispell. On the women’s side, the Saints welcomed Hannah Christian from Bellevue. Wash., Julia Gross from Bainbridge Island. Wash., Alexandria Shinaut from Ogden. Utah, and Jackie Mee from Libby. Mont. With the success of last year still hanging in the air. the Carroll golf team looks to repeat a conference champion ship. As of Septem ber 22. the women’s team is at seven wins, zero losses, and only one tie. Kelsey Dye. senior psycholog) major from Albany Ga. and team co-captain, said. \We know that if our goal of making it to nationals this year is legit, we cannot lose a conference game. It's as simple as that. We have been content so far. but we know we have so much more to give to each other on the field and at practice. The more we mentally push each other, the further we will succeed.” Both Dye and teammate Laura Maddock. senior nursing major from Bismarck. N.D.. spoke highly of their many freshman teammates. This year, the Saints have brought on 11 new players. So far. they agree that the new players have done well adjusting to the pace of college soccer and arc exhibiting great leadership, on and off the field. Recently, the Carroll soccer team was ranked number 22 in an NAIA coaches’ poll. While being ranked offers a new level of respect throughout the conference. Mad dock put it. “when a team is in the top 25. all [of| the other unranked teams have it out for them”. Right now. they are w orking to keep up their excitement lev els and work on their communication on the field. The Saints play Westminster on Sunday. September 30 at 1 p in. Carroll comes back after two losses S i t Sophomore Allie Reynolds keeps pace photo by gary m Cross Country begins with success The Carroll cross-country team is off to a tremendous start. On September 22. the Carroll women placed second overall at the Red Lion Challenge in Spokane. The Carroll men placed eighth overall. Junior Rhiamia Grossman, nursing major from Com d’ Alene. Idaho, finished third ov erall in the women’s five-kilome ter course, with a blistering time of 17 minutes and 59 seconds. The week before, at the Bozeman MSU invitational, the Carroll women placed fifth out of ten teams, with a point total of 126. and the men finished seventh out of ten teams, totaling 188 points. The season opened on September 7 at the Carroll College Earl) Bird Open. The Saints runners did their home course proud, with the women finishing in first place with 102 points, followed by Rock)' Mountain College with 72 points. Carroll’s men finished fourth at this meet, with an 89-point total. The runners will continue their heat on September 28 at the University of Mon tana Open, and on Octoer 13 at the Adidas Cross Country Classic in Portland. The August 24 game saw two back-to- back touchdowns by senior business major Chance Demands from Malta. Mont. Against Rocky Mountain, junior quarter back Dakota Stonehouse from Glenwood Springs, Colo., completed 11 of 18 passes for 111 yards. Of those 111 yards, 37 came in a touchdown-scoring pass dow n the middle to sophomore Anthony Clarke Blackfoor, Idaho. After two big wins, the Saints arc look ing forward to a successful season. Their next game will be at Dickinson State on Saturday, September 29. Sophomores Anthony Clarke and Drew Clausen celebrate a touchdown PHOTOBY GARYMARSHALL Dana Miller Editor The Carroll Saints football team is com ing back from two disappointing games with a 19-6 win over Rocky Mountain on September 15 and a stunning 28-7 win over Eastern Oregon for homecoming. Despite opening the season with a pretty 31 -6 win over MSU Northern on August 24, the Saints had to deal with a few hum bling defeats this season. The team is recovering from a painful loss to Montana Tech on September 8, the first loss Carroll has had to its notorious rival in eight years, as well as a 20-38 loss to Portland State on September 1.
