XXXV t!o. 7 ~inifred, M t. 59~89 :- : arch 18, l ') i .1 · RAIDER REPORTE R , Alcohol is one of the oldest and most commonly used drugs. People behave differently withdifferent amounts of alcohol. One thing however, remains basically the same: How the body handles alcohol is quite similar for all people. Most teenagers drink to get that feeling of being \high\ or because it is the thing to do. Some kids drink so they can be part of the group, or because it gives them that extra courage they need to do things, talk to other people, or to have that happy, non-caring feeling. Most people think that alcohol is a stimulant. The - truth is, it's a depre:ssant. Why kids drink, no one knows. What they do with their own life is their business. If they have been drinking though hopefully they still will have enough sense \not to Drive.\ When alcohol reaches the brain i.t affects the way r,eople behave. The effects are present with one drink. Hi ' s inhibitions are lessen,'ld. fie may be less critical of himself and others, His judgment begins to · be affected. After three drinks, his judgment is not sound - . !~ will not think clearly. His reasoning is less reliable. He many door say thintJS that are rude anr. unreasonable. /\fter five drinks, of his behaviors &ffected. Body most are partil seem to not \work together\ H i s hearing, speech vision, and balance are affecte,i. He will find that walking without stumbling i~ difficult. So as you can see every drink you t~ke affects you more, On the average, most kids drink anywhere from three to eight drinks a night or even more. If you were to drive even after one drink, your reflexes are slower. If you drive, you are not only dangering your life, but ohters as well. Half the de&ths injuries, and property damage occuring on our highways every year stem from accidents in which alcohol is involvea. Today there are many people trying t:o do things about this problem. The state law enforcement is getting tougher on D. \•).I. On the first offense of D.W.I., you will be imprisoned for up to 24 hours, and fined $600. Your license will be suspended for a period of six months. Your insurance rates will go up tremendously, and some companies might even drop you. I feel that it isn't worth driving while drinking because it isn't \10rth a life or an accident. There's always that \chance\ · of something happening. So next tir.te your drinking and having a little fun, please don't drive. And remember •• \Friends don't let friends drive drunk.\ ~if,&ftAte On t-!arch 6, the Jr. · and Sr, classes went to Helena to attend the Legislature. 1•:e left at 10: 00 on the bus while some of our chaperones went in a car, v;hen we arrived in Helena later that day, we were allowed to do what we wanted. r,;onday, we \•:ent to the Capitol and were talten on a tour, followed by lunch.
