The use of cocaine in America these days has increased drastically. Cocaine use has increased 6001/. between . 1976 and 1981. 4 mi 11 ion Americans use cocaine on a regular basis and 5000 Americans try cocaine for the first time. Cocaine related deathes have increased 1980. 3241/. I hope that by~ educating the publ i c concerning the effects on cocaine, we can slow down the rate at which this drug is sweeping across the country. The cheer leading tryouts for ne x t year's Varsity squad are going to be held Wednesday, r1ay · 6, in the High School gym lsl: period. The seven Winifred during trying out are girls Lynn Kel 1 i e Wickens, Halverson, Green, Krista Melanie May, and Lynette Wickens, Kara Rhonda Bergum, Morgan. The five varsity cheer 1 eaders w i 11 be chosen by the students in grades 8-11, The five selected wi 11 represent Winifred High Shoal next year. HIGH SCHOOL WEEK On the morning on April ,- 23, four Winifred High School students left for Bozeman, Montana and the 1987 MSU High School WeeK. · Those attending were John Hruska, Scott Rogers, Susie Bolstad, and Stan Leonard. A ·· lso joining the Winifred contingent were Mr. Cantu and Case y Ri nda 1 from · Roy. The y experienced a brief la y over at Hobson, so the travelers were able to practice being Michael Jordan, Dominque and the Doctor j Once on the road again they made good time uritil Big Timber where thRY had to stop for various reasons which wjll not be discussed at this time. Next stop was Bozeman, where they ate lunch and then signed in. During the afternoon the students visited various parts of the campus. Stan and Scc,t t got to rape l l off a building with the help of the Army ROTC. After this they checked into their rooms, changed into g y m clothes and went to check out the P.E. complex. They were able to round up a pick up game where they totally outclassed a group of college players. Using their superior quickness and physical condition, this group of young men totally demo! ished a much bigger ball team. The actual High School Week activities started with the Kickoff session that even.i ng. I can't remember what happened here, so it must not have been important. After this, they were divided into groups and taken on tours of the various dE~artments which they were interested in. By this tirne, it was ,;;ie-tting late and was time f,:,r bed. Fr · ida y morning, the 24 of Apr · i 1, they i-\• . oke up at 6:30, ate brea~ : fas . t, and headed for the Field House to take t ne scholarship test. After four grueling hours, 900 studetns exploded through the doors of Worthington Arena with a look of space on their face. - ~ Time . - : ~.'° eat lunch and · vJatch · . . _ !Sun bathers . through binoculars and then back to your grou~s again. At this time, G olle-ge . · ·' · ,_ life was discuss ! J ~ and the stude ' n ts ./' were given . their shades for the dance. They then sat in on simulated lecture. There was then free-time un ti 1 the A w ards Banquet that night. The dance was after this and then it was, again, time for bed. The- students had to get up .early the next morning to go to Denton wehre- ~ ~veral of them were competing in track meet. This was a good learning experience as well as a good time.
