Freshmen to Sponsor 'Candy Cane Lane' TV Show on KGHL Thursday Three readers and the a cap- pella choir will present a Christ- mas program on KGHL-TV Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. The 15 minute pro- gram sponsored by the Radio and gram will be presented on KGHL's \Spotlight according to Richard Grover, EMCE radio-TV director. The program will open with the choir singing \Break Forth 0 Beauteous Heavenly Light,\ fol- lowed by a reading of \The Lit- tlest Angel\ by Carol Brown, Billings junior. \Carol of the Drum\ will then be sung follow- ed by a reading of \The Christ- mas Scripture\ by Gene Cetrone, Billings sophomore. \0 Sanctis- sima\ and \Adoramus Te Christe\ sung by the choir followed by a reading of \The Christmas Prayer\ by Duane Pettersen, Glendive junior, will conclude the program. The readers and choir pre- sented the same program at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10 at the Christmas Party held in the SUB Lounge for the student body. Winter Quarter Registration Jan. 4 Winter quarter registration will be completed by all students wish- ing to attend Eastern on Monday, Jan. 4, the first day after the Christmas holidays, Frank Mor- gan, acting registrar, announced. During the holidays, each stu- dent will be sent an official time appointment card which will be directed to the student's perma- nent address. Upon presentation of the card at the designated time, each student will be issued his student packet containing class cards and cards to be filled out with pertinent data. Students who failed to pre- register before Christmas will re- ceive time appointment cards on Jan. 4 that will enable them to register late Monday afternoon. If students did not indicate they were coming back to school, they will not receive a time appoint- ment card from the registrar's of- fice. The purpose of pre-registration is to \speed up\ registration pro- cedures by enabling all students to consult their advisors well in advance of registration. Marietta Forehand, junior ele- mentary education major from Joliet, was elected corresponding secretary of Associated Women Students at the AWS executive council meeting Dec. 7. Eastern's holiday festivities were officially launched yester- day with the second annual Was- sail party and Christmas tree decorating sponsored in the Stu- dent Union Building from 3-5 p.m. for Eastern's entire student body and faculty by the Student Union Board. Wassail, spiced heated apple cider, fruit cake, and Christmas cookies were served by Eastern faculty wives including Mrs. Gil Allardyce, Mrs. Dale Daugherty, Mrs. Gilbert Dyer, Mrs. Charles Gruenert and Mrs. Dennis Win- ters. Events of the of the afternoon were climaxed by the performance of the \Play- boys,\ a vocal ensemble consisting of Po Murry, Bud Ridenour, Denny Schmidt, and Glenn West and a combination speech-musi- cal program presented through the combined direction of Richard Grover and Harold Slagle. Miss Hamilton stated, \The members of the Student Union Board wish to thank the students and faculty wives who helped us to complete the plans for the Was- sail party. We hope that this type of party can become an annual holiday festival at Eastern.\ by Jane Madson In approximately 33 hours, at 9 p.m., tomorrow evening, Dec. 12, the 1959 Christmas Formal will begin in the Student Union Building. Sponsored by the freshman class, this year's dance features \Candy Cane Lane\ as its theme. In the words of the dance chair- . man, Jay R. Marston, \This pro- mises to be the most glorious for- mal dance Eastern has ever seen!\ The dance is free to any student currently enrolled at Eastern and guests holding courtesy passes, but dance sponsors want to stress that this is strictly a \date\ af- fair, and no \stags\ will be ad- mitted. Candy Cane Lane Elaborate decorations, which have been made the past few weeks by the members of the freshman class, will transform the SUB into a majestic Candy Cane Lane. Mr. and Mrs. Frostie, snowmen made from napkins and chicken wire, will greet the guests as they come in the door. In the center of the dance floor. a bell-shaped mobile full of holly and mistletoe will hang with a blue light in the center. Addison Bragg's band will play behind a sleigh, and above it an electric, silver mobile with colored lights will twirl. The punch table will take the form of a brightly colored Christ- mas package. According to Jeanne Noble, chairman of the refresh- ment committee, red punch steam- ing in dry ice and candy cane shaped cookies will be served. In the southeast corner of the room will be the Christmas tree, decorated by the members of the student body yesterday afternoon at the annual Wassail party. Candy canes will be placed in the Christmas wreaths above the dance floor and will be connected with yuletide streamers. Tables on which candle center- pieces will be placed will sur- round the dance floor. The decorations will be planned and carried out by the decoration committee under the direction of Linda Townsend, chairman. Santa Claus to Come The programs will be the shape of candy canes and will contain five pages including the names of the honored guests. Jan Rustand is the head of the program com- mittee. If all goes as scheduled, Santa Claus (Denny Foley) should arrive at 10:30 to highlight the dance. Santa will give out candy canes to all couples. Door prizes will be awarded to couples selected ay their programs. For entertainment the Billings Senior High School Keynotes will sing a variety of Christmas tunes. Members of this sextet include Norma Alstad, Gail Gunderson, Patty Lee, Holly Platt, Sylvia Sel- lect and Sally Verden. Chere Mc- Vey is chairman of the entertain- ment committee. Honored Guests Honored guests will greet dan- cers in a reception line. All fac- ulty members and their wives or husbands have been invited to at- tend. Young ladies will greet guests at the door and present them with programs and check their coats, a new feature inaugur- ated to facilitate entering and leaving the dance. According to Donna Laddusaw, chairman of the chaperone corn- inittee, honored guests for the dance will be the vice president of the college and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Lincoln J. Aikins; the (Continued on Page 3) Student Directories Now on Sale in SUB Nov on sale at the SUB activ- ities desk is the student directory compiled by Associated Women Students, Ruthann Barnicoat, di- rectory committee chairman has announced. Copies of the directory, which sell for 50 cents, are limited, and students are urged to buy theirs as soon as possible, Miss Barnicoat said. The directory con- tains the names, addresses and telephone numbers of Eastern's entire student body of 1,160. Members of the AWS student directory in addition to Miss Bar- nicoat are Sharon Henderson. who typed all the masters, Barbi Hu- ber, Jan LaValley, Jerri Walker, Jean Aronen, Linda Bolin, Julie Lesnick, Darlene Vesley and Don- na Kiss. \We would like to thank Miss Carol Saunders and Mrs. Peggy Reid for their help in producing the directory,\ Miss Barnicoat said. Next Retort Jan. 15 No Retort will be published next week because of final exam- ination, Judy Rollins, editor, has announced. A Retort will not be published, Jan. 8, first week of winter quarter, because of reor- ganization of the staff, she said; the first winter quarter Retort will be Jan. 15. Christmas vacation for EMCE students will begin with the ter- mination of final exams one week from today, Dec. 18, which marks the end of fall quarter. Winter quarter will begin Monday, Jan. 4, registration day, with classes resuming Tuesday, Jan. 5. Wassail Party Begins Xmas Activities
