Thursday, Dec. 13, 1962 T H E W E S C O L I T E Page Three Funk Takes Hayes In Four, Wins Championship Jim Funk won the WMCE Chess Championship by defeating Frank Hayes in two straight games last Thursday afternoon, December 6. Hayes, who had claimed the title by default, lost two games to Funk in the first round held two weeks ago and then lost two more last Thursday to give Funk the championship in four con secutive games. When asked how he felt about the victory, Funk said, “It was a hard fought battle, and Frank was a worthy opponent, but, as Mr. Cypher stated, it was my su perior coaching that was instru mental in my victory. Anyone wishing to play me is invited to attend the Chess Club meetings and try his luck, but all games will be unofficial until another tournament is organized.” Sometimes the only exercise that people get is jumping at conclusions. C o a c h Colleen McNally’s squad lacks experience, but im provement should come in the next few games if she can get' them. The victorious Whips, on the other hand, displayed a blaz ing offensive as well as a stun ning defense to overcome a 26 point deficit in the fourth quar ter. The game provided many laughs as the Globetrotters dis played their version of basketball. Also keeping the game going were the three officials. The Globetrotters supplied two, Bet ty St'ranieri and Georgia Davi son. The third official, Pat Del- ger, was not sponsored by any particular team. The game was played using women’s rules for three quarters and men’s rules for the final quarter. The Whips had some trouble moving the ball in the first half; but in the second half they had little trouble, especially in the fourth quarter, when the Globetrotters defense seemed to lack teamwork. Starting for the Globetrotters were Judy Ray, Olive Cain, Car ol Lemon, Donna Mason, Bonnie Beck, and Shirley Webber. The second squad consisted of Lynn Blair, Paula Kelly, Toni Gustaf son, Mary Fleming, Betty Moen, and Sharon Anderson. On the in jured list with a bad ankle was their ace forward, Saundra Matt son. The veteran Whip team relied on eight men: Jack Gillespie, Bud Shuman, Rick Cadieux, Del Car- roll, Dick Jonasen, Jim Netz, Cliff Neighbor, and Butch Donovan. If anyone is interested in play ing the Globetrotters they can contact coach McNally for details. First of all the sale of the sweatshirts is being held in the newly ac quired room in the SUB; students wanting to purchase a Western sweatshirt are asked to come to the SUB between the hours of 4:60 and 5:00. Instead of the sweatshirts being all black this year, WRA has them in various colors such as orange, blue, tan, olive green, and black. All girls are cordially invited to attend sports night every Mon day evening beginning at 7:00. Weekend Activities At Western Hoop activity was held to a minimum at Western this week end as the Bulldogs were engag ed in keen competition on the West Coast. Saturday night student's enjoy ed dancing to the music of Dan ny and The Raiders. A great crowd turned out and danced right up until girls’ hours. In fact, a few girls forgot the time and found the door locked when they got to the dorm. Students had a free night, Fri day, to do as they pleased, as there wasn’t' any planned cam pus activity. Miss Giem won an all-expenses- paid trip to the state finals held in Great Falls December 3-5. While she was in Great Falls, she was a luncheon guest at the Country Club, attended model ing and make-up lessons, and took part in modeling the contest clothing. Marcia did not place first in this state contest as she did in the junior division two years ago, but she did not return home emp ty-handed. Her award was a hem marker and two yards of Pendle ton wool. Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don’t vote. JOCK TALK With the 1962 basketball sea son underway, with each MCC squad being tested with non-con ference clubs, we have chosen the MCC clubs to end their sea son as follows: EASTERN CARROLL WESTERN ROCKY MINES NORTHERN It seems quite evident that' Eastern, with a majority of re turning lettermen, will be able to withstand the attacks of West ern and Carroll this season to cop the MCC title. Coach Bill Straugh is begin ning his re-building program with quite a few good prospects, but because of their lack of exper ience, we cannot predict the new Western club will finish at the top of the MCC basketball sea son, but neither will we find them at the bottom of the col umn. We are hoping for an up set which will enable Western to finish close to the top, or even at the top.
