Atlantic, Dillon M T 59725 USE OF TOBACCO LIMITED ON CAMPUS Effective as o f the Fall Semes ter, 2 0 0 1 , the use o f tob a c c o o n campus has b een limited, mostly w h ere chew ing tobacco is con cerned. B u t, h e re are ju s t a few reminders o f w h at the old rules are,and also a rem inder o f w h at the new rules are. Tobacco u se o n UMW’s cam pus has always b e e n lim ited A c cording to th e Student Hand book, n o sm oking is allowed in hallways, public areas, or in a student’s room .You m u st b e at least ten feet from a b u ilding in order to sm o k e any k ind o f to b a c c o . Sm o k e d e te c t o r s are checked b y you ResidentAssistant on a monthly basis, so p lease re member that any tampering with your detector will b e cause for dis ciplinary action. Up untfi now, though,smoke- less tobacco has never really b een a c o n c e r n . O f c o u r s e , you wouldn’t politely“chew ”in class, but i f the instructor didn’t n otice, then it wasn’t really considered a probtemThere have n ot b een any stated rules concerning the use o f this form o f tobacco until now. Because o f a recent lack o f re spect for the buildings, andalack o f r e s p e c t for cleaning crew s, som e students have felt that it is all right to spit o r leave their left over chew o n the floors,in sinks, and in th e drinking fountains, ju s t to nam e a few places.The cleaning crew s have b e e n left to deal with the mess that this leaves behind,and in return,m ore time SO LONG, LONG DISTANCE “O n e m ore b it o f n ews,” R e s id e n t A s s is tan t Cara Holmquist told the residents o f Mathews b asem ent at the first flo o r m eeting o n Mon day, A ugust 2 7 .“T h e re is n o more long distance.To make any long distance calls you will need p h one cards.” Dorm residents, b o th re turning and first-tim e, w ere greeted w ith the same an- nouncement.The mandatory flo o r m e e tin g s w e r e th e first tim e m o st students had heard o f th e e radication o f the long d is tan c e serv ice. Many, like Jerem iah Fossness, w e re al ready using phone cards for long distance calls. O thers, like K a tie Strong, w e re shocked at th e la s t-m in u te a n n o u n c e m ents. “It really puts some o f the stu dents in a bind,” says Strong.“ W e w ere n ever notified so w e didn’t have tim e to go out and buy phone cards.” by: Suzie Hodges Two m o re factors add to th e p ligh t o f students w ithout p h o n e cards A fter buying s chool supplies and paying for tuition and h o u s ing, m o n ey is in s h o rt sup ply fo r many. I t leave unsightly stains and odors, n o t to mention the g erm s that it w ill also leave behind. People s tep in it, and track it o n to their floors,spread ing colds, flu, and o ther comm u nicable diseases. As unpleasant as this all sounds to us,you can n ow imagine h o w unpleasant it is to those who are left to do the clean ing. To help solve this ongoing problem, a few rules have b een e s tablished Anyone who is o n cam pus is n o longer allowed to use chewing tobacco in any o f the fa- cilities.This includes class halls, and th e PE com p lex.A s for th e dormitories, students are permit ted to u se chewing tobacco only in th e privacy o f th e ir room s. They are n o t to use it in the hall ways, rest rooms, study rooms, o r in the cafeteria. As a general rule, just remem b e r to use com m o n courtesy when these matters arise.Remem- ber that n o m atter what, there is always someone that has to clean up afteryou,but just put your feet in their shoes, and know that if it was you, you w o u ldn’t w ant to dean after o ther people.
