Time to sign up for Miss Flathead The Reservation-wide Pow Wow Committee announces that it is now accepting applications for this year’s Miss Flathead contest Contestants must be am enrolled member of the Confed erated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and be between 16 and 25 years of age. They must also be single. All interested young ladies can obtain applications from the following: Phillip Paul at Tribal Health in Ronan, Bearhead Swaney at Air Quality in S t Ignatius, Debbie Paul (644-2411), or Helen Matt From page one............................................................................................................... drivers; 15% of the boys in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades said they were heavy drinkers; and 52% of all the seventh graders said they had tried alcohol anchor drugs. Based on these figures, Finley’s recommendations, repor ted to the S t Ignatius Community Action Team on Chemical Awareness May 1, included prevention efforts be aimed at non-users and kids in grades K-6. Both prevention and intervention work is needed for the grade 7-12 students. Finley told the CAT group that prevention efforts should go into helping the youngsters develop decision-making, peer pressure refusal, and stress-coping skills, as well as teaching them the health facts of alcohol abuse. Young people need to learn how to have drug-free fun, too, she said The whole community has to be committed to addressing the problem, t o o - teenagers, parents, teachers, counselors and the police. Mary Herak of the S t Ignatius CA/RE (Chemical Awareness/ Responsive Education) Program said limited copies of the Finley report are available by calling her at 745-3811. Tribal high school graduates eleven Eleven students graduated from Two Eagle River School on May 17. The outdoor ceremony was held at the school in Dixon. Severed people, including the Pistol Creek Singers, turned out for the nice and comfortable graduation exercise (photo on page 18). Former Principal Mike O’Donnell was the Class of ’85’s guest speaker. He had some very positive things to say about the “strengths of Two Eagle River School.” Some of the strengths he mentioned were: the students, the staff and teachers, the board of directors and the Tribal Council, who is very supportive of the school He commented that all of these contribute to the uniqueness and the success of TERS. He also added that in his daily struggles as a student at the U of M, he is constantly inspired by his memories of TERS. W estern S eed fè S u p p l ì , I nc .
