That* Tiny Insect* Produce Sound* Audible to Human Ear*. That aijt* arc capable of pro ducing Bounds intelligible to their fellows, and even uudible to tho ears of men, seems to ham been proved by the experiments of Sir John Lubbock, Landois, Lorel, Warsmann and others. Jt seems to be also determined that tho sounds are produced by the rubbing together of superficial portions of the body. A simple yet ingeniou* contriv ance is used for enabling an ob- icrver to bear and to study these sounds. A glass funnel is set, small end down, in the midst of a pane of window glass of live or sii inches square, fitting closely enough to prevent the insects crawling out pud or it. A bunch of ants as large us a chestnut and free from any foreign substance is dropped through the funnel and that is lift ed up at once. While the ants are still confused and before any of them can reach the edge of the glass, it is covered with another square like it, which has been sur. rounded a short distunce from its edge by a pad of putty. The two plates of glass are press ed together to within about the thickness of the ant’a body, but closer on one side than on the oth er, so as to hold some tight and leave others free to take such posi tions as please them. On applying the box of ants to the car as one would a watch, a reg ular buzzing may be beard like that of boiling water in an open vessel, and with it come some very clear, shrill sounds, like those a cricket or grasshopper produces by rub* bing the legs on the body. The ants may be kept alive*sev- eral hours, and' even (lavs, in the prison if it is not airtight, and whenever (lie ants are excited the Striduiations may he heard very numerous and intense. The striduiations are supposed to be produced by rubbing the rough, scaly surface of the chiti- jious covering, which looks, when 6een in one ciiroction under the microscope.
